Nanshoso is a magnificent residence featuring modern Japanese-style architecture located in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture. The building consists of a series of tatami rooms, wooden-floored halls, and verandas (engawa) that open toward the garden, preserving the atmosphere of a high-class estate from a bygone era. The centerpiece is a 'Chisen Kaiyu-shiki' (stroll garden with a central pond), where the water surface, moss, and trees present different, breathtaking expressions throughout the seasons. This space, where the architecture and nature are seamlessly integrated, offers visitors a profound sense of traditional Japanese aesthetic beauty.
The residence is believed to have been built around 1885 by Angoro Segawa, a prominent businessman from Morioka. Through various additions and renovations by successive owners, it evolved into the sophisticated modern Japanese-style structure seen today. Designated as an important landscape building in Morioka, the structure is a two-story wooden building with a traditional tiled roof. It is deeply connected to local culture, hosting events such as the 'Hina Matsuri' (Doll Festival) with traditional displays, and being a site for viewing Adonis flowers (Fukujuso) that have been cultivated in the area since the Edo period.
One of the greatest charms is the view of the garden from within the building. In the room known as 'Nanshō-no-ma,' the polished wooden floors create a stunning effect called 'Toko-midori,' where the garden scenery is reflected perfectly on the floor. Sitting on the veranda (engawa) allows you to feel the close proximity between the architecture and nature. The garden features a central pond, and you can enjoy the scenery of water, rocks, and plants from various perspectives through the different rooms and verandas. Seasonal exhibitions, such as pottery displays and the observation of seasonal flora like autumn leaves, are also highly recommended.
Nanshoso offers unique charm in every season. In spring, you can enjoy the blooming Adonis flowers and traditional festivities like the Hina Matsuri. Summer brings lush greenery, while autumn is the most spectacular season. From early to mid-November, the Iroha and Yama-momiji maple trees turn vibrant colors, and seeing their reflection on the polished floors is a must-see. Winter offers a peaceful, serene atmosphere with snow-covered landscapes. To enjoy a quiet experience, visiting in the morning is recommended to avoid crowds.
Visitors can enjoy traditional Japanese tea service on the premises. A menu featuring matcha or coffee served with seasonal sweets is available (approx. 500 JPY per set). Orders are placed at the entrance reception. Depending on the season, the site also hosts cultural events, such as exhibitions by local artists from Ohama area. Whether you wish to stroll through the garden, read a book in a quiet room, or observe seasonal plants, there are many ways to spend a relaxing time.
Located in the heart of Morioka, Nanshoso is easily combined with other historical sightseeing spots. Nearby attractions like Morioka Castle Site Park, Iwate Bank Red Brick Building, and the Morioka Takku/Kenji Seishukan are within walking distance or a short trip away. A perfect itinerary involves visiting historical buildings in the city center in the morning and spending a relaxing afternoon at Nanshoso enjoying the garden views.

Please walk carefully to avoid damaging the property. We ask that you maintain a quiet atmosphere to respect other visitors. While photography of the beautiful reflections on the floor is common, please be considerate of others. Please note that the tea service accepts cash only.
