Nanaore Falls is a breathtaking scenic spot located in Osako-cho, Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture. The most striking feature of this waterfall is a phenomenon known as 'Hyonguri,' where the water appears to burst out sideways with great force. The way the water cascades and bends multiple times creates a visual spectacle that is incredibly rare in Japan. Surrounded by lush greenery, the landscape offers a different, captivating expression with every season.
This area is part of the rich natural environment of Hanamaki City, where the beauty of natural formations has been cherished for generations. While there are no specific historical buildings or shrines, the site is a beloved destination for local nature enthusiasts and hikers who come to witness the incredible power and artistry of the natural world.
The primary attraction is the unique falling pattern of the water. The 'Hyonguri' phenomenon, caused by the specific topography and the force of the water, creates a high-impact visual experience. Additionally, from early to mid-October, the surrounding trees turn vibrant colors, creating a stunning contrast between the white cascading water and the brilliant autumn foliage.
The best time to visit is from early to mid-October when the autumn colors are at their peak. During this period, the harmony between the flowing water and the colorful leaves is truly unforgettable. While the lush green scenery of summer (July–September) is also beautiful, please be cautious when walking near the stream, as water levels may rise due to heavy rain.
Visiting the falls involves hiking and nature walks. There are two main routes to reach the falls: the 'Oroshi-zawa Stream Route,' which follows the stream upstream from the signpost, and the 'Take Parking Lot Route,' which leads through a serene cedar forest. Both routes offer a deeply immersive experience, allowing you to feel the sounds and textures of the natural environment.
The area around Hanamaki City is famous for its connection to the writer Kenji Miyazawa and its many hot spring-kyo (onsen) resorts. It is common for visitors to enjoy a relaxing soak at a Hanamaki Onsen after visiting Nanaore Falls. The region serves as an excellent base for exploring the diverse natural landscapes of Iwate Prefecture.
As this is a wild natural environment, preparation is essential. We highly recommend wearing sturdy hiking shoes or trekking gear rather than light casual footwear. Please carry sufficient water and snacks. Since some areas may require cash (such as for parking), it is wise to have Japanese Yen on hand. Importantly, this area is a bear habitat; we recommend carrying a bear bell for safety. Please ensure you carry all your trash back with you to protect the environment. There are no restrictions on photography, but please respect the natural scenery. Note that the area is not barrier-free, featuring unpaved paths and uneven terrain, so please watch your step carefully.
