Nanakaze Baisuen, located in the rolling hills of Tobe Town, Ehime Prefecture, is a premier destination for enjoying the elegance of plum blossoms amidst a rich natural environment. The expansive 7-hectare site is home to approximately 16,000 plum trees across 30 different varieties. During the blooming season, the mountain is covered in a vibrant tapestry of red, pink, and white blossoms, creating a breathtaking landscape. It is a special place where visitors can truly feel the arrival of spring through the sight of the flowers and the melodious song of the bush warbler.
The garden is deeply connected to the local culture and the natural environment of the region. Every year, the 'Nanakazeume Festival' is held to coincide with the peak blooming period, serving as a cherished local tradition. Beyond just sightseeing, the garden acts as a cultural hub where locals and visitors interact through the sale of regional specialties and agricultural products related to the plum, fostering a sense of community.
The greatest draw is the sweeping view of the slopes covered in plum blossoms. The varying colors and shapes of the different varieties create a magnificent spectacle across the mountain. There is also an observation deck where you can look out over the entire garden to appreciate its vastness. Depending on the season, you can also enjoy the beautiful color contrast between the plum blossoms and the yellow rapeseed flowers. At the local stalls, you can find various plum-related products and local agricultural goods.
The most beautiful scenery is typically seen from late February to early March. During this time, the Nanakazeume Festival is held, providing a lively and festive atmosphere. If you prefer a more tranquil stroll away from the crowds, visiting on weekday mornings is highly recommended. On weekends and during festival days, the area becomes quite crowded, so please plan your visit with plenty of time to spare.
The primary activity is strolling through the paths while admiring the exquisite plum blossoms. The walking paths offer wonderful opportunities for photography and enjoying the seasonal scenery. During the festival period, the onsite stalls offer unique local treats such as pickled plums (umeboshi), plum syrup, plum vinegar, and plum wine, as well as local farmer-made jams, pickles, and daifuku (mochi). Sampling these local delicacies is a quintessential part of the experience.
The area around Nanakaze Baisuen is dotted with other nature-filled spots. For instance, Oya Pond and Ehime Forest Park are located within approximately 1.5km to 1.7km, making them easy additions to a half-day or full-day sightseeing itinerary for families and nature lovers. Additionally, Tobe Town is famous for its traditional crafts, offering more cultural experiences for travelers interested in local artistry.
As the garden is located in a mountainous area with slopes, stairs, and walking paths, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since temperatures can fluctuate in early spring, it is wise to bring a light jacket or extra clothing for warmth. Please bring cash for purchases at the stalls. To protect the natural environment, please follow local etiquette, such as taking your trash home with you.
