The Nanao Castle Ruins is a designated National Historic Site located in Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture. This site served as a significant mountain castle from the Muromachi to the Sengoku periods, having been expanded by the Noto Hatakeyama clan. Today, the site is home to the Nanao Castle History Museum and the Kaiko-kan, a building that preserves the atmosphere of a traditional local residence. The castle ruins themselves are open 24 hours a day, allowing visitors to walk through the terrain and enjoy the surrounding landscape at any time.
Located in the former Noto Province, this massive mountain castle once spanned approximately 2.5 kilometers in length and 1 kilometer in width. It is famous for its strategic layout, featuring fortifications such as 'kuruwa' (enclosures) and forts positioned along the mountain ridges, a design perfected by the Noto Hatakeyama clan. The site is highly regarded in the field of castle archaeology due to its scale and well-preserved structures. Visitors can also find various monuments and stone inscriptions related to local history and folk songs throughout the area.
There are several facilities near the ruins dedicated to preserving and displaying historical materials. At the Nanao Castle History Museum, you can see exhibits regarding the castle's origins, detailed diagrams of historical battles, and impressive CG reconstructions of the castle's former appearance. The adjacent Kaiko-kan offers a glimpse into the past through its traditional architecture and displays of antique folding screens and Japanese swords. Additionally, the Nanao Joyama Observation Deck near the Honmaru (inner citadel) area provides a breathtaking panoramic view of Nanao City.
Since the castle ruins are open 24 hours a day, you can explore the grounds at any time. However, if you plan to visit the museums or the Kaiko-kan, please be sure to check their specific operating hours. The most pleasant times to visit are during May, September, and October when the weather is comfortable. Notably, in December, the Nanao Joyama Observation Deck area features illuminations, offering a beautiful and different atmosphere for evening visits.
Visitors can engage deeply with history through various activities. The Nanao Castle History Museum is a designated stop for the 'Japan 100 Famous Castles' stamp rally, so collectors can collect their stamps there. For a more profound experience, you can participate in guided tours led by local volunteer guides (reservation required), which provide professional and detailed explanations of the site. These tours are an excellent way to understand the complex structures of the ancient fortifications.
The area at the foot of the castle ruins retains the atmosphere of an old castle town. Nearby, you can also visit local temples such as Choreiji. To reach the site, you can take a taxi from JR Nanao Station or use the local 'Marin-go' community bus, getting off at the 'Castle History Museum Mae' stop. If traveling by car, the most common route is via the Noto Expressway, exiting at the Nanao Joyama Interchange and heading toward the Honmaru parking lot.
