Nakano Momiji Mountain (Nakano Shrine) is a renowned destination for autumn foliage located in Kuroishi City, Aomori Prefecture. Its history dates back to 1802 (Kanwa 2) when Tsugaru Neyori, a lord of the Hirosaki Clan, brought and planted over 100 varieties of maple seedlings from Kyoto. Today, the site is home to magnificent natural wonders, including maple trees approximately 200 years old and giant cedars estimated to be between 500 and 700 years old, which are celebrated as great trees of the Tsugaru region. These botanical treasures are designated as municipal natural monuments, showcasing the exquisite sculptural beauty of nature. The vibrant colors of the autumn leaves harmonize perfectly with the surrounding waterfalls and mountain streams, creating a breathtaking spectacle.
The site is home to Nakano Shrine, one of the "Tsugaru Sanfudo" (Three Sacred Sites of Tsugaru). The Tsugaru Sanfudo includes Nakano Shrine, Hasezawa Shrine in Kuroishi, and Kokugami-dera Temple in Hirosachi. The tradition of planting maple trees has been preserved since the Hirosaki Clan era, making it a significant cultural symbol of the region. The area has long attracted international attention; notably, the famous English traveler Isabella Bird once visited this site and recorded in her journals that "everything here is charming," highlighting its timeless appeal.
The greatest attraction of Nakano Momiji Mountain is the autumn foliage display. The maple trees, which surround the mountain streams and waterfalls, reflect brilliantly on the water's surface, creating a vivid tapestry of color. Within the shrine grounds, the presence of ancient giant cedars and designated natural monuments adds a sense of profound weight and majesty to the landscape. Historical sites like the Fudokan ruins also add a layer of cultural depth to the area.
The most spectacular time to visit is during the autumn season from September to November. During the peak foliage period, the contrast between the colorful maple leaves and the flowing water of the streams and waterfalls is particularly striking. We recommend visiting during daylight hours to fully appreciate the vivid colors and the movement of the water. As there are no special night illumination events mentioned, visiting during the day is the best way to enjoy the natural light and scenery.

To deepen your understanding of local culture, consider a route that includes the other Tsugaru Sanfudo sites, such as Hasezawa Shrine in Kuroishi or Kokugami-dera in Hirosachi. Since the area is easily accessible by car, you can easily combine this visit with other local hot spring (onsen) resorts or sightseeing spots.
There is a paid parking lot available near Nakano Shrine. As you will be walking through natural terrain, please ensure you wear comfortable walking shoes and stay on the designated paths.
