Nandakariga Hiija is a natural spring located in the Tamagusuku district of Nanjo City, southern Okinawa. Locally, it is known as 'Ufuga.' This site is uniquely famous for possessing a Goemon-buro—a traditional method of heating water using a large iron pot over a wood fire—making it the only such structure in the prefecture. Due to its immense historical and cultural value, it was designated as a National Important Cultural Property in 1995.
The area surrounding Nandakariga has long been a center for traditional Okinawan rituals. Even today, sacred traditions such as We-da Ugan, Hama-uri, and Ami-shinu Ugan (including rope-pulling ceremonies) are preserved in this community. The area is also rich in spiritual history, including sites like the Mintong-suku (private land) associated with the mythical figure Amamikiyo. For generations, this spring has served as a vital water resource deeply integrated into the daily lives and spiritual practices of the local villagers.
The most striking feature is the stone-paved slope that leads from the village down to the spring. This path offers a journey back in time, preserving the traditional atmosphere of old Okinawa. Additionally, the unique structure of the Goemon-buro-style spring is a rare sight in the prefecture. The harmony between the natural spring and the historical structures creates a landscape that can only be experienced here.
Nandakariga Hiija is accessible 24 hours a day, allowing visitors to enjoy the tranquil scenery at any time. Whether in the lush green of summer or the gentle light of other seasons, the stone-paved path and the bubbling spring offer a peaceful escape from the modern world.
