The Nakamura Keith Haring Museum is the world's only museum dedicated to the works of Keith Haring, a defining artist of 1980s American art. Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters in Kobuchisawa, Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, the museum is surrounded by breathtaking natural landscapes. Centered around the collection gathered by founder Kazuo Nakamura, the museum offers a profound space to experience Haring's powerful message of moving "from darkness to hope."
The main building opened in 2007. The founder, Kazuo Nakamura, encountered Keith Haring's work in New York in 1987 and began his dedicated collection. The museum's architecture was designed by the renowned contemporary architect Atsushi Kitagawara. In 2015, the museum underwent a renewal, adding the Freedom Exhibition Room and the Museum Theater (courtyard), evolving into a space that communicates Haring's philosophy and life in even more diverse and engaging ways.
The core of the exhibition lies in the collection of works characterized by Keith Haring's iconic bold lines and vibrant colors. The energy emitted by these pieces resonates with the surrounding natural environment, creating a truly unique atmosphere. The architecture itself is a masterpiece; designed by Atsshi Kitagawara, it represents a seamless fusion of nature, art, and modern sensibility. In winter, please be aware that snow and icy road conditions may occur in the area; we recommend checking local weather reports before traveling. For the best experience, we suggest visiting during daylight hours when natural light beautifully illuminates the exhibition spaces. As the final admission is at 16:30, please plan your schedule with plenty of time to spare.

The museum is located in the Kobuchisawa area at the southern foot of the Yatsugatake mountains. The surrounding region is rich in water and natural beauty, perfect for hiking and nature walks. Access is convenient via a taxi (approx. 8 minutes) from Kobuchosa Station, and the area is easily accessible by car. You can plan a wonderful trip that combines art and nature using local tourism maps.
Please note that large bags, backpacks, food and beverages, cameras other than smartphones (such as DSLRs, compact cameras, or action cams), umbrellas, pens other than pencils, and dangerous goods are prohibited in the exhibition rooms. Free coin lockers (100-yen coin return type) are available. Smoking is strictly prohibited throughout the museum and its surrounding premises. As there are stairs leading to the rooftop and courtyard, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes for your visit.
