Nakajima Park is a lush urban oasis located right in the center of Sapporo. It is renowned for its ever-changing scenery that reflects the distinct beauty of each season: delicate cherry blossoms and wisteria in spring, refreshing greenery in summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and a serene, white snowy landscape in winter. The park features a central pond and historic structures, making it an ideal spot for both peaceful nature walks and seasonal cultural activities.
The park is home to precious architectural treasures from the Meiji era. Most notably, the 'Hohei-kan' building stands as a testament to the history of the Kaitakushi (Hokkaido Development Commission). Originally built as a luxury hotel during the Meiji era, it has served various roles, including a public hall and a wedding venue. The sight of these historic buildings nestled within the natural landscape beautifully symbolizes the historical development of Sappato.

The central pond is the iconic symbol of the park. The contrast between the calm water where waterfowl swim and the surrounding seasonal foliage creates a breathtaking view. Visitors can also enjoy the unique atmosphere of areas related to important national cultural properties. Inside the historic Hohei-kan, you can experience a sense of luxury through its exquisite decorations, such as high-end carpets and elegant chandeliers, which evoke the sophisticated atmosphere of the Meiji era.
Spring (April–May): The season of cherry blossoms and wisteria, offering a colorful and bright landscape.
Summer (June–August): A time of lush greenery and vibrant plants like the Japanese iris, perfect for an open-air atmosphere.
Autumn (September–November): The peak season for autumn colors, where the trees around the pond turn brilliant shades of red and yellow, reflecting beautifully on the water.
Winter (December–March): A quiet, white landscape. During this time, enchanting events like 'Yuki-akari' (Snow Lantern) may bring a magical atmosphere to the park.

There are various activities to enjoy depending on the season. From late April to early October, you can enjoy boating on the Shobu-ike pond. In winter, the park becomes a space for snow-related activities, including cross-country skiing, with some equipment rental services available. Additionally, the area around the park features charming cafes and sandwich shops where you can enjoy a relaxing break while admiring the scenery.
The area surrounding Nakajima Park is filled with local gourmet and shopping opportunities. For instance, the famous sandwich shop 'Sandria' is located nearby, offering popular local flavors. The park is also very conveniently located with easy access to major sightseeing spots throughout Sapporo, making it a perfect base for your city exploration.

We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes for your stroll. Depending on the season, please prepare accordingly: sun protection for summer and heavy winter gear (thick coats, gloves, and hats) for the cold. Regarding payments, while some nearby cafes accept credit cards or IC cards, it is always safe to carry cash. While photography of the scenery is free, please respect the rules inside historic buildings. Most main paths are accessible (barrier-free), though some uneven surfaces may exist due to the natural terrain. Please be mindful of other visitors to maintain the peaceful environment.
