The Nakahashi Family Residence is an Important Cultural Property located in the historic Imai Town of Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture. It preserves the architectural styles of the late 18th century (the Horeki to Tenmei eras), serving as a precious window into the lifestyle and culture of that era. This residence was maintained by a family lineage known as 'Yonehiko,' who prospered as rice merchants. Despite being a medium-sized residence, it features a unique structure that blends commerce and daily life. The exterior, characterized by the harmony of white plaster walls and wooden paneling, exudes a profound historical atmosphere.
The history of this residence is deep; even in an old map from 1748 (the first year of the Kan'en era), a residence was already recorded on this site. Based on its structural design and construction techniques, the current building is believed to have been constructed in the late 18th century. The family flourished as rice merchants and, toward the end of the Edo period, expanded into fertilizer and hardware trading, playing a vital role in the local economy. This background makes the building more than just a dwelling; it is a symbol of the region's commercial development. Its architectural features and design serve as excellent examples of the advanced residential forms of the merchant class during that period.
The most captivating feature is the interior layout, which recreates the living spaces of the Edo period. The interior consists of a 'doma' (earthen floor) on the west side and a six-room layout on the east. In the southwest corner of the earthen floor, there is an open space called 'shomise' (front shop). Additionally, the 'tsushi 2-kai' (a low-profile second floor) was added in later years, serving as a distinctive element that tells the story of the building's architectural evolution. The exterior is equally impressive, with traditional elements such as the contrast between white walls and wooden panels, and a heavy tiled roof with eaves on the south side.
