Nuiha Bridge is located at the mouth of the Kushiro River in Kushiro City, Hokkaido. The name is said to originate from the Ainu word 'Nusa-o-mai,' meaning 'the place where the ceremonial offerings are placed.' As the bridge spans the lowest part of the river, it serves as an iconic symbol of Kushiro, seamlessly blending man-made structure with the surrounding natural landscape.
The site has a long history of reconstruction. The first wooden bridge, known as 'Aikoku Bridge,' was built in 1889 through private funding. The first official Nuiha Bridge followed in 1900 but collapsed in 1909. Subsequent wooden versions also faced destruction. In 1928, the fourth version, made of reinforced concrete, was completed. The current fifth-generation bridge was erected on November 26, 1976. A unique aspect of this bridge is the 'Four Seasons of Eastern Hokkaido' sculptures, which were funded through a local community movement in 1977, making it a rare example of citizen-led public art in Japan.
