Nagatoro Castle is a mountain castle located in Minakami Town, Tōne District, Gunma Prefecture, characterized by its unique status as a natural fortress. Situated near the confluence of the Tone and Akaya Rivers, the castle was built utilizing the rugged terrain of steep cliffs surrounding three sides of the site. Its origins date back to a residence built by the Nagatoro clan during the Muromachi period, and it later served as a crucial strategic base during pivotal historical turning points. Today, it is a designated Prefectural Historical Site, where visitors can still see the original shapes of major ruins such as the Honmaru (Main Enclosure) and Ninomar (Second Enclosure).
The history of this site began when the Nagatoro clan established their residence during the Muromachi period. Later, it became a significant front-line base during the Sengoku (Warring States) period. The castle is historically famous for its role in the events surrounding Toyotomi Hideyoshi's campaign against the Hojo clan in Odawara, symbolizing the strategic importance of this region in Japanese history. The site continues to be preserved and maintained to pass down its immense historical value to future generations.
The castle follows a 'Renkyaku-shiki' (connected enclosure) style, with structures such as the Madashi, San-kaku, Ni-kaku, Honmaru, and Sasa-kaku arranged in a sequence. In the center of the Honmaru, a stone monument stands as a testament to the site's long history. From the Sasa-kaku enclosure, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, providing a visual understanding of how the natural terrain was used for defense. The well-maintained paths and traces of earthworks (dorui) are precious relics that demonstrate the advanced castle-building techniques of the era.
It is best to visit the Nagatoro Castle Information Center during daylight hours throughout the year. If you wish to participate in a guided tour, it is highly recommended to check the operating hours of the information center in advance. Because the site is surrounded by lush nature, you can enjoy the changing scenery of the seasons while contemplating the form of the ancient fortress.
Visitors can enjoy guided tours led by local history volunteer guides. Through the information center, you can gain much deeper insights into the historical background of the site. Additionally, you can purchase a 'Goshuin' (a commemorative seal/certificate) as proof of your visit. There are two types available: a traditional Washi paper type and a wooden type, each offering a different texture and aesthetic. These are sold exclusively on-site and serve as a wonderful historical souvenir.
The Minakami area offers many other natural and historical attractions. The region is home to the beautiful Mt. Tanigawa, Minakami Onsen (hot spring) villages, and various dams and valleys. You can easily combine a visit to the castle with a tour of the surrounding natural landscapes. Access via Kōgan Station is a common way to explore this area.
As this is a mountain castle site with many ruins, comfortable walking shoes are essential. Please note the following when using the information center or participating in tours:
