The Nagi Museum of Art and Contemporary (Nagi Moca) is located in Nagi Town, Katsuta District, Okayama Prefecture. It is a profound space where architecture and art are seamlessly integrated, designed by the world-renowned architect Arata Isozaki. The defining characteristic of this museum is the collaborative creation between the architect and the artists, resulting in a structure where the building and the artworks are permanently unified. The exhibition rooms are named "Sun," "Moon," and "Earth," each possessing a unique axis based on natural phenomena. Rather than a mere exhibition facility, the architecture itself functions as a massive, living work of art.
The main building opened on April 25, 1994. Designed by Arata Isozaki, the museum houses monumental works by internationally acclaimed artists such as Shusaku Arakawa, Madeline Gins, Kazuro Okazaki, and Aiko Miyawaki. These massive installations are of a scale rarely found in typical museums, and the very space they inhabit was constructed specifically to house them. This facility represents a vision of the future museum, born from a deep dialogue between the architect and the artists.
