The history of Nagayu Onsen is deeply rooted in the past, with mentions dating back to the early Nara period in the 'Fugoku no Kuni Fudoki'. In 1706, the Ochaya facility was built to serve the Nakagawa family, the lords of the Oka domain. In 1933, the effectiveness of the carbonated springs was scientifically researched by a doctor from Kyushu Imperial University, bringing widespread recognition to its unique properties. In 1978, it was designated as a National Health and Recreation Area. Furthermore, Takita City maintains a sister-city relationship with Bad Kreuznach, Germany—a city famous for its carbonated springs—which has influenced the presence of European-style architecture in the local bathhouses.
