The Nagasaki Peron Championship is a traditional boat racing event passed down through generations in Nagasaki. The sight of the crew, drummers, and helmsman working together on a Peron boat to move forward in perfect unison is incredibly powerful. The way the rowers dip their oars simultaneously to the rhythm of the drums and gongs is one of the most captivating elements of the race.
Peron is a traditional form of boat racing deeply rooted in Nagasaki's history. It is more than just a competition of speed; it is a cultural event that emphasizes the importance of spiritual unity, where the entire team must harmonize their movements with the rhythm of the drums and gongs to advance the vessel.
The greatest thrill of the race is the exquisite teamwork displayed as everyone rows in perfect timing to the beat. Additionally, the 'Occupational Competition' features teams representing various companies and organizations. Seeing boats adorned with the names of local businesses competing fiercely is a unique and characteristic sight of this championship.
The event is typically held in July. As it is an outdoor summer event, it is essential to prepare for the heat and intense sunlight. We recommend following the progress of the races closely to enjoy the high-energy atmosphere of the summer season.
During the championship, there are plans for 'Experience Peron,' where the general public can actually board and row the boats. This is a rare and precious opportunity to feel the traditional culture firsthand by rowing to the sound of the drums. Please note that the Experience Peron is conducted on a first-come, first-served basis, with registration typically starting around 9:00 AM on the day of the event. Participation is not allowed for preschool children, and elementary school students must be accompanied by a guardian.
The venue, Matsugaeda International Tourism Pier, is located near many of Nagasaki's most iconic sightseeing spots. We recommend planning a sightseeing itinerary that combines watching the Peron race with exploring the nearby Glover Garden, Oura Catholic Church, and Nagasaki Seaside Park to enjoy the historical charm and beautiful scenery of Nagasaki.
As this is an outdoor event located by the sea, please take full precautions against sun exposure and heat. We highly recommend bringing a hat, parasol, sunscreen, beverages, and a towel.
