Nagao Tsurugi Jinja is a captivating shrine located in Shiranui Town, Uki City, Kumamoto Prefecture, characterized by its stunning seaside scenery. The most striking feature is the torii gate that appears to stand directly in the sea, with its appearance changing dramatically depending on the tide. Furthermore, it is a renowned location for observing the 'Shiranui' (a mysterious atmospheric light phenomenon), making it a destination where natural phenomena and ancient history intertwine beautifully.
The shrine boasts an incredibly ancient history, founded in the year 713 (Wado 6). According to local legend, a giant ray carrying the sea deity 'Wadatsumi-no-kami' settled in this area. Because the tail of this ray was shaped like a sword (tsurugi), the shrine came to be known as 'Tsurugi Jinja.' The name 'Nagao' is also said to derive from this legendary creature. This area is deeply rooted in Japanese history, with tales related to Emperor Keiko found in the Nihon Shoki, and it is officially designated as a national scenic beauty site.
The primary attraction is the torii gate standing in the ocean. Because the view changes significantly between high and low tide, the scenery offers a different aesthetic depending on when you visit. Additionally, during the 'Hassaku' period (the first day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar), the site is famous for the opportunity to witness the 'Shiranui'—a rare mirage phenomenon that appears over the Yatsushiro Sea during low tide in the early morning. This phenomenon requires specific topographical and meteorological conditions, offering a truly mystical experience. The shrine is also traditionally visited by those seeking blessings for gastrointestinal health.
The best time to visit depends on your interests. For photography enthusiasts, mid-December is highly recommended as the combination of the torii gate and the sunset is particularly beautiful. If you wish to witness the Shiranui phenomenon, you must visit during the early morning of the first day of the 8th lunar month during low tide. During the day, you can enjoy the changing expressions of the torii gate caused by the tides, and in the evening, the coastal landscape provides a serene and beautiful atmosphere.
The main experience here is the observation of natural and historical phenomena. Observing the 'Shiranui' mirage is a unique experience found only in this region. Visitors can also enjoy the tranquil seaside environment while reflecting on the historical atmosphere of the shrine and the beautiful natural formations of the coastline.
The surrounding area features facilities such as 'Michi-no-Eki Shiranui' and 'Agri Park Toyono,' which are great for breaks during a drive or for finding local specialties. The coastal route along National Route 266 is an excellent road for a scenic drive with beautiful ocean views.
