Nagamachi Samurai District is a historic area where the residences of middle-ranking samurai from the Kaga Clan once stood. Located just a short walk from the bustling Korinbo district, stepping into this area feels like entering another era. The landscape is defined by tranquil spaces, ochre-colored earthen walls, and winding cobblestone alleys. As a designated preservation district, it offers a seamless blend of modern life and historical aesthetics, providing a peaceful escape from the city.
This district serves as a living museum of the lifestyle of the samurai during the Kaga Clan era. The architecture and gardens have been meticulously preserved to maintain the atmosphere of the period. A key feature of the landscape is the Onosho Canal (Onosho Suido), an ancient waterway that has supported local life for centuries and continues to provide a soothing soundtrack of flowing water to the streets today.

The district reveals a different face with every season. In winter, the most iconic sight is 'Komogake'—the practice of wrapping the earthen walls with straw mats to protect them from snow and freezing temperatures. This sight, combined with the falling snow, is a quintessential Kanzaawa winter tradition. Walking through the district while listening to the gentle flow of the Onosho Canal is also a highly recommended way to experience the changing seasons.
While wandering the streets is delightful, you can deepen your experience through guided tours. The Nagamachi Samurai District Rest Area hosts free volunteer guides known as 'Maido-san.' These guides provide detailed historical explanations and help you navigate the-most significant spots efficiently. Please note that if you are visiting in a large group or have special requests, advanced reservations are required.
The district is dotted with charming shops and restaurants that blend perfectly into the historic scenery. You can find Kutani porcelain shops, quaint cafes, and traditional restaurants serving local Kanazawa cuisine. Its proximity to the Korinbo commercial district makes it a very convenient location for travelers.
Because the streets consist of many cobblestone paths and uneven surfaces, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. As this is a residential area, please maintain a quiet and respectful demeanor.
