Nagakusa-yama Park Observatory is a premier viewpoint located in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, offering a high-altitude perspective of the breathtaking Kujukushima islands. Spanning a vast area of approximately 4.7 hectares, this park provides a serene view of the many islands within the Saikai National Park. A highlight of the park is the spring season, when about 100,000 blooming azaleas cover the mountain slopes, creating a vibrant contrast against the deep blue of the sea and sky. From the observatory, you can enjoy a wide-angle panorama stretching from Mt. Atago to the Kujukushima islands and Oshima. A popular photo spot is the monument featuring the characters for "Kujukushima," perfect for capturing memories. During the spring (April to May), the "Azalea Festival" turns the slopes into a sea of pink and red, showcasing the incredible natural colors. For families, the "Chibikko Hiroba" (Kids' Plaza) offers a fun area with playground equipment, including a 100-meter long roller slide, making it a great spot for children's recreation.
The scenery changes significantly with the seasons, with the peak beauty occurring in spring (April–May) during the azalea bloom. During the daytime, the bright sunlight highlights the clarity of the blue sea, while the evening offers a stunning gradient of colors as the sun sets. The scenic views remain beautiful throughout the summer and autumn as well. Please note that operating hours vary by season: from March to September, the park is open until 20:00, and from October to February, it closes at 19:00. Visiting near sunset is highly recommended to witness the changing colors of the sky.

The surrounding area features several spots to deepen your understanding of the Kujukushima islands. For instance, the Nagakusa-yama Campground allows for an immersive stay in nature. If you head toward central Sasebo, you will find many restaurants serving local specialties like Sasebo Lemon Steak and unique curry dishes. The coastal driving routes around Kujukushima are also well-developed, making it a perfect part of a scenic road trip.
Since the park includes slopes and some stairs, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. It is also wise to bring a hat to protect yourself from the sun and dress according to the season. While the park features barrier-free ramps, some stairs are present. Access to the park itself is free, but you may need cash or a credit card for nearby facilities or transportation. Photography of the scenery is free and encouraged, but please respect the natural environment and follow local etiquette.
