Nagaike Shinsui Park is a beautiful park situated on the northern shore of Lake Yamanaka, one of the Fuji Five Lakes. The most striking feature of this location is the unobstructed, panoramic view of Mount Fuji directly across the lake. Because there are very few obstacles in the line of sight, visitors can experience a powerful and immersive landscape that highlights the grandeur of Japan's most iconic peak.
The surrounding area has long been revered for its spiritual connection to Mount Fuji and its scenic beauty. While the park is a modern facility designed for rest and relaxation for tourists and drivers, it has become a significant cultural landmark for photographers. It is specifically famous for being a prime location to witness the 'Diamond Fuji'—a natural phenomenon where the sun aligns perfectly with the summit of the mountain.
The greatest appeal of the park lies in the ever-changing expressions of Mount Fuji dictated by the seasons and time of day. A highlight for many is the 'Double Diamond Fuji,' which can be observed in mid-November and early February, when the sun appears to rest on the summit and reflects beautifully on the lake surface. During the clear winter months, the snow-capped peak of Fuji appears exceptionally vivid. The park also features gazebos (azumaya), allowing visitors to sit comfortably while admiring the scenery.
The scenery evolves beautifully with each season. In spring, you can enjoy the view of Mt. Fuji through blooming cherry blossoms. In summer, the contrast between the blue sky and the snow-free mountain is striking, though it is recommended to visit in the morning as clouds often form in the afternoon. Autumn brings vibrant foliage to the surrounding trees, creating a colorful frame for the mountain. Winter offers the clearest air, making it the best season for Diamond Fuji observations. For the most dramatic visual changes, aim to visit during the evening as the sun begins to set.
The area around the park is well-suited for outdoor activities such as jogging, walking, or cycling, thanks to the well-maintained lakeside paths. You can use the onsite gazebos to take a break and soak in the scenery. Whether you are focused on professional photography or simply want to enjoy a short stroll while feeling the refreshing lakeside breeze, the park offers a perfect environment for mental refreshment.
Various accommodations, including pensions and hotels, are scattered around the shores of Lake Yamanaka. Staying overnight allows you to experience the tranquil, early morning lakeside atmosphere that day-trippers might miss. The park is also easily accessible via a scenic drive, located near the Yamanakako IC of the Higashi-Fujigoko Road.
Because the lakeside is often windier and cooler than urban areas, please bring warm clothing, especially during winter or in the evening. While the park and parking are free, it is useful to have cash or a transit IC card for nearby transportation or local shops. While English signage and staff support are limited, the natural setting is easy to navigate. The parking lot accommodates about 80 vehicles, but it can become very crowded during peak events like the Diamond Fuji, so arriving early or considering public transport is advised.
