Naena Falls is a spectacular 55-meter drop located on the upper reaches of the Sekigawa River, on the border between Myoko City, Niigata Prefecture, and Nagano Prefecture. It is officially selected as one of the 'Top 100 Waterfalls in Japan.' The falls are famously known as 'Jishin-taki' (Earthquake Falls) because the intense sound of the water crashing against the rocks echoes through the surrounding forest like a rhythmic tremor. The landscape is defined by its striking basaltic walls featuring columnar jointing—a natural geometric beauty created by volcanic activity. Additionally, the site serves as the starting point for the 'Myoko Kogen Nature Trail,' a designated forest therapy road.
The formation of Naena Falls is linked to the movement of andesite lava from Mount Kuroki, which blocked the Sekigawa River. Historically, the water flowed in two directions due to a rock at the mouth of the falls. However, it is said that in 1813, a large amount of timber from the Takada Clan's logging operations caused the rock to break, resulting in the current single-stream shape. The appearance of the waterfall has long been a vital sign for local life; along with the 'cow-shaped' snow patterns on Mt. Myoko, the waterfall's flow signaled the time to begin rice planting. Throughout the 19th century, the falls served as a source of inspiration for many artists and poets, who captured its power in various works of art.
The greatest attraction is the dynamic sight of water plunging vertically with immense force. From the observation points, visitors can witness the powerful spray and the sheer scale of the falls. The geological features are also a major draw; the basalt walls exhibit well-developed columnar jointing (hexagonal pillars), while the cliffs above the walking path reveal plate-like jointing in the lava. The standard experience involves a walk from the parking lot along a well-maintained path toward the observation deck. The walk takes approximately 15 minutes, making it a gentle hike that offers the benefits of 'forest therapy.' From the viewpoint near the base of the falls, you can feel the intensity of the water and hear the deep, rumbling sound of the 'Earthquake Falls.' It is a perfect place for nature photography and observing geological formations like columnar jointing.
