Nada Kuroiwa Suisenkyo is one of Japan's three great narcissus colonies, sprawling across the steep slopes of Mt. Urutsubayama on the southern coast of Minamiawaji City, Hyogo Prefecture. Approximately 5 million Japanese narcissus (Suisen) grow naturally across a 7-hectare area, creating an iconic winter landscape for Awaji Island. Since its renewal in December 2023, the facility has been developed to allow year-round use. The rooftop features an observation deck where visitors can enjoy the changing expressions of nature alongside a panoramic view of the Kii Channel.
The history of the narcissus in this area dates back to the Edo period. It is said that local fishermen began planting bulbs that washed ashore onto the mountainside, which eventually developed into these massive natural colonies. Since the 1950s, local residents have led preservation efforts to protect this vital landscape. The area also holds literary significance, as it is the setting for the birthplace of 'Otose,' the heroine of Keishi Funayama's novel 'Otose.' Recently, the site was revitalized with a new management building and improved walking paths, serving as a modern hub for community and tourism.
The greatest attraction is the mass blooming of Japanese narcissus amidst the winter chill. The sight of pure white flowers accompanied by their sweet, delicate fragrance is a unique seasonal experience. The renovated facility also includes 'Fuku Cafe' on the second floor, where you can rest while enjoying the view. From the rooftop observation deck, you can gaze out over the calm Kii Channel and see Nuijima, an island deeply connected to Japan's creation myths. It is a stunning location where natural beauty meets the sea.
The peak blooming season is typically from mid-January to late February. Visiting in mid-January, when the flowers begin to bloom in earnest, offers the most spectacular sight as the entire slope turns white. Since this is a winter destination, visiting during daylight hours is recommended to fully appreciate the vivid colors of the sea and sky. While the facility is open year-round, the period from January to February is the best time to see the full narcissus display. The intensity of the fragrance and the way light reflects off the sea surface change beautifully throughout the day.
The primary activity is a relaxing stroll along the well-maintained walking paths, allowing you to feel the breath of nature and observe the intricate beauty of the flowers up close. You can also immerse yourself in the peaceful atmosphere of Awaji Island while taking a break at the cafe. During the peak blooming season, shuttle buses may be operated to assist with transportation, making the journey part of the experience. It is an ideal spot for refreshing your mind, photography, or quiet relaxation.
The area is dotted with other scenic spots, such as the nationally designated 'Keino Matsubara' pine grove and the world-famous 'Naruto Whirlpools' (Naruto Strait). You can also explore the cultural side of the region at the Minamiawaji City Takigawa Memorial Art Museum (Gyokushukan). Combining these sites allows for a rich and diverse travel itinerary through southern Awaji Island.
As most visitors come during the winter, we recommend wearing warm clothing to protect against the cold. Because the paths are on a slope near the coast, sturdy walking shoes are highly recommended.
