Myoryoji is a temple of the Nichiren sect located in the Kaminose area of Minami Alps City, Yamanashi Prefecture. Historically, this area held significant land and was revered as 'Ura-Minobu' (the hidden Minobu), possessing a prestige comparable to the famous Minobu San Kuon-ji Temple. While a devastating fire in 1949 destroyed many structures, the 'Rinzo'—a massive, rare rotating bookshelf—miraculously survived, preserving a piece of history for us to see today. The temple is also a place of deep faith, where the Kannon deity is worshipped for protection during childbirth, child-rearing, and the longevity of descendants.
The temple was founded by the mother and son duo, Myoryo Nichibutsu-ni and Nichiryo, direct disciples of Nichiren Shonin. A major turning point in its history occurred in 1949 when a large-scale fire caused significant loss, yet the surviving structures serve as a testament to its enduring value. The temple also holds a tradition of being a site for prayers regarding the birth of the Tokugawa clan members, playing a vital role in the local community's spiritual and historical fabric for many generations.
The most striking feature of Myoryoji is the 'Rinzo.' This massive, rotating bookshelf is an incredibly rare architectural structure that provides a window into the culture and technology of the past. Visitors can also offer prayers to the Kannon deity, a guardian for safe childbirth and child-rearing, within the temple's tranquil atmosphere. The grounds also feature traditional gates and worship halls, allowing you to experience the profound aesthetics of Japanese architecture up close.
Myoryoji reveals a different face with each season. The most spectacular time is spring (late March to April), when the cherry blossoms—said to have been brought from Minobu San—are in full bloom. During this season, the temple grounds are bathed in vibrant colors, offering a peaceful moment amidst nature. Additionally, in April, visitors may witness traditional ceremonies such as the 'Senbu-e Hoyo' ritual, adding a layer of cultural depth to the seasonal scenery.

When visiting the temple, please respect the quiet and sacred environment. As you may need to remove your shoes when entering certain buildings, it is convenient to bring easy-to-remove footwear and clean socks. If you wish to purchase amulets (omamori) or stamps (goshuin), please prepare cash (Japanese Yen). Regarding photography, please follow local etiquette and seek permission if necessary in sacred areas. Please note that there are some steps and uneven surfaces, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
