Myokoku-ji is a prestigious temple of the Nichiren sect located in Hosojima, Hyuga City, Miyazaki Prefecture. With a history dating back to the founding of the Muromachi Shogunate, the temple's mountain name is Kofuku-zan. Its most significant feature is the beautiful garden, which is officially designated as a National Scenic Spot. The Chisen-shiki (pond-stroll) garden utilizes the natural forest of Mount Kome as 'shakkei' (borrowed scenery), creating a harmonious landscape where nature and spirituality converge.
The temple's lineage is ancient, with traditions tracing back to founders such as Saisho Ajari Jikyo and Dai Ni-so Satsuma Ajari Jie. During the 14th-century Kamakura period, it played a vital role in the propagation of Nichiren Buddhism in Kyushu. During the Edo period, because Hosojima Port served as a transit point for the daimyo's procession (Sankin-kotai) in Southern Kyushu, the temple also served as a resting place for officials. Records even show visits from prominent figures like Yasui Sokken during the late Edo period. It is a site deeply intertwined with the regional faith and history.
The primary highlights of Myokoku-ji are its exquisite garden and the historic Sanmon (mountain gate). The garden features a pond, a central island, stone arrangements, and three distinct hills (tsukiyama), which are said to represent Buddhist concepts such as the Three Realms or the Pure Land. A simple wooden bridge spans the water, adding to the tranquil scenery. Additionally, the 'Meoto Icho' (Married Ginkgo Trees), estimated to be 300 years old, stand as iconic symbols of the temple's longevity. The cultural significance is further emphasized by precious treasures, including mandalas drawn by Jikyo and sacred statues like the Ito Iemochi Fudo Myoo.
The garden displays different expressions depending on the season and time of day. From the corridor on the south side of the main hall, visitors can enjoy a serene, elevated view of the landscape.
