Muika Snow Resort is an all-season highland resort located in a high-altitude area of Minamiuonuma City, Niigata Prefecture. It serves as a premier destination for skiing during the winter and a hub for various highland activities during the summer. The resort features a direct connection to the "Muika Onsen Hotel," allowing guests to relax in natural hot springs immediately after skiing or outdoor activities. Its prime location, just about 5 minutes from the Muikamachi Interchange on the Kan-etsu Expressway, ensures smooth and easy access by car.
The resort has a rich history, formerly known by names such as "Muikamachi Minashi Ski Resort" or "Muikamachi Ski Resort," before transitioning to its current name, "Muika Snow Resort," following changes in management. The connected hotel has also seen name changes, evolving from the "Joetsu Star Plateau Hotel" and "Joetsu Muikamachi Highland Hotel" to the current "Muika Onsen Hotel." The area is deeply connected to local culture; for instance, the region has historically hosted the "Dibisaemon Okuribi Grand Festival" on August 16th, a tradition related to the birth of the famous historical figure Uesugi Kagekatsu.
The ski slopes spread out from the Masugata Mountain at an altitude of approximately 748 meters. During the snow season, the terrain offers a wide variety of experiences, ranging from beginner-friendly courses to more challenging off-piste fields for advanced skiers. The resort also hosts regular snow events, such as "Snow Treasure Hunts" specifically designed for children under elementary school age. In the summer, the landscape transforms, offering a refreshing way to experience the natural beauty of the highlands through different types of activities.
The winter season (November to March) focuses on skiing and snowboarding. The months of January, February, and March are particularly recommended as they offer stable snowfall. In the summer, the resort provides a refreshing escape where you can feel the cool highland breeze and enjoy activities that are quite different from the winter experience. Standard operating hours are generally from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, and it is best to plan your activities during these bright daylight hours.
In winter, besides skiing and snowboarding, the resort offers various courses including moguls, parks, waves, and short poles, depending on the snow conditions. Some areas even allow for hiking-access off-piste skiing. During the summer, the resort is filled with seasonal events and highland-specific activities, making it a wonderful place for families to create lasting memories together.
Located right next to the resort is the "Muika Onsen Hotel," which features natural hot spring facilities. After a long day of skiing or outdoor activities, guests can soothe their fatigue in the hot springs. Additionally, Minamiuonuma is famous for its high-quality rice, so exploring the local gourmet scene is a highly recommended part of your visit.
For winter visits, high-quality thermal wear, gloves, and goggles are essential. For summer activities, bring comfortable clothing and a light jacket to handle changing weather-related temperatures.
