Mototaki Fuku-ryusui is a breathtaking natural landscape located at the foot of Mt. Chokai in Kaho City, Akita Prefecture. The site is characterized by a massive 30-meter wide rock face from which approximately 50,000 tons of water emerge every single day. This constant flow, combined with the vibrant green moss, creates a scene of unparalleled beauty. Recognized as one of the '100 Best Waters of the Heisei Era,' the area is famous for its exceptional water quality and the mystical atmosphere created by the white mist rising from the water's surface.
This landscape was sculpted over thousands of years by the lava flows from Mt. Chokai (occurring between 160,000 and 20,000 years ago) and the cold spring water that flows through the subterranean layers. The water filtering through the lava layers emerges through gaps in the rock face, maintaining a high humidity level that supports a rich ecosystem of moss. While a traditional waterfall known as 'Mototaki' once existed, access to the original falls is currently restricted due to past landslides. Today, the flowing water (Fuku-ryusui) is cherished as a precious natural resource and a symbol of the region's geological history.
The most striking feature is the sight of water cascading across the entire 30-meter wide rock face. The water temperature remains consistently low at around 10°C (50°F) throughout the year. In the summer, the temperature difference between the cold spring and the warm air often generates a beautiful white mist, lending a mystical quality to the scenery. This contrast between the white water spray and the deep green moss makes it a favorite for photographers. Additionally, the walk from the parking area to the falls via a well-maintained path allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in the natural environment.
While the water flows continuously year-round, the scenery changes with the seasons. Summer is particularly special; the high ambient temperatures combined with the cold spring water create a dramatic mist that enhances the ethereal atmosphere. The lushness of the moss is also most vivid during the warmer months. Please note that visiting at night is not recommended for safety reasons. For the best experience, we suggest visiting during daylight hours when the natural light beautifully illuminates the textures of the rock and moss.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll while feeling the raw energy of nature. The approximately 750m path from the parking lot is a single trail surrounded by dense greenery, perfect for breathing in the fresh, mineral-rich air. For those interested in a longer nature trek, the nearby 'Naso no Shirataki' waterfall is also accessible. Many visitors come specifically for photography; using a wide-angle lens is highly recommended to capture the full, expansive scale of the 30-meter wide water curtain.
