The Sakura along Motosumiyoshi Shibukawa River is a renowned cherry blossom spot located in Nakahara Ward, Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture. Situated within walking distance of Motosumiyoshi Station on the Tokyu Toyoko Line, it offers a rich, natural landscape right in the heart of the urban area. The approximately 2km stretch of cherry trees creates a breathtaking contrast between the ivory sky and the soft pink blossoms, signaling the arrival of spring.
This area has a long history of being maintained through the dedicated efforts of local residents. The culture is deeply rooted in the community, exemplified by events like the 'Sumiyoshi Sakura' festival held during the blooming season. The continuous upkeep of the surrounding area and the decoration of traditional 'bonbori' lanterns are part of a community-driven tradition that preserves the local charm.
The greatest attraction is the 2km long cherry blossom path following the Shibukawa River. The trees are meticulously maintained as street trees, creating a beautiful scenery alongside the flowing water. From late March to early April, charming bonbori lanterns are hung along the branches, adding a touch of festive color to the landscape. Additionally, the area features well-maintained riverside-walkways and water-side terraces, making it an ideal spot for a relaxing stroll.
The best season to visit is from late March to early April, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom and the colors are most vibrant. Please note that there is no nighttime illumination (light-up) service, so it is best to visit during the bright daylight hours to fully enjoy the scenery. A sunny spring afternoon is the perfect time for a walk.
Nearby, Nakahara Heiwa Park often hosts community events such as traditional performances and parades as part of the 'Sumiyoshi Sakura' festival. You can also enjoy a peaceful moment sitting on the benches at the riverside water-side terrace. Since the Motosumiyoshi Station area features a lively shopping street, you can easily combine your walk with exploring local food and dining options.
The location is extremely convenient, just a 3-minute walk from Motosumiyoshi Station. The area around the station is filled with various shops and a bustling atmosphere. Nakahara Heiwa Park is also nearby, allowing you to visit both the park and the cherry blossom path in one trip. Scenic views of the river and blossoms can also be enjoyed from around the Ise-bashi, Gion-bashi, and Yakura-bashi bridges.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for your stroll. In the surrounding shopping streets and station area, both cash and credit cards are widely accepted for dining and shopping.
