Mount Moriyoshi is a volcano standing at 1,454.2 meters in Kitakami City, Akita Prefecture. Historically known as 'Akita-yama,' it has long been a beloved landmark for locals. The mountain is renowned for its dramatic seasonal transformations. In winter, the area near the Ani Gondola Summit Station features massive frost formations known as 'Juhyo,' one of the three most spectacular frost phenomena in Japan. In contrast, during the summer, the landscape is covered in lush wetlands like the Yamahitodaira area, where diverse alpine plants thrive. Due to its rich biodiversity, the area is designated as a Prefectural Natural Park and a National Wildlife Protection Area.
The history of Mount Moriyoshi is deep; records show that during the Edo period, the mountain served as a landmark for Kitamaebune ships navigating the seas. Near the summit, you can find the 'Kaburi-iwa' (Crown Rock), a peculiar formation of stacked boulders. Legend says these rocks were piled by a mythical figure named Otomaru. The area also holds cultural significance in literature; the Edo-period scholar Sugae Masumi visited the mountain, leaving behind poems and detailed climbing records. To preserve this precious ecosystem, the area was designated as the Moriyoshi Wildlife Protection Area in 1973, providing a habitat for black bears, Japanese serows, and rare bird species.

The highlights of Mount Moriyoshi change drastically depending on when you visit. During winter (January to March), the massive frost formations around the Juhyo-daira area are the main attraction. In summer (June to September), the mountain transforms into a colorful paradise of alpine flowers. In areas such as the Yamahitodaira wetlands, you can spot plants like Skunk Cabbage (Mizubasho), Aleutian avens (Chinguruma), and various Gentians. Additionally, in certain terrains near the summit, you might witness the 'Madarabego' phenomenon, where melting snow creates patterns resembling the spots on a Holstein cow.
Because the landscape changes so significantly, it is best to visit with a specific goal in mind. For the spectacular frost monsters, visit between January and March. For lush greenery and blooming flowers, June is ideal. From late July to early September, you can enjoy summer blooms like Aleutian avens and Gentians. Since the scenery is highly seasonal, we recommend checking local blooming reports or weather conditions before your trip to ensure you see the sights you desire.

Visitors can enjoy nature observation and hiking. Winter is perfect for viewing the frost-covered trees, while summer is ideal for botanical exploration. For those seeking winter sports, the Ani Ski Resort on the southwestern slope offers skiing and snowboarding. For safety, there are mountain huts available near the summit, such as the Moriyoshi Shrine Hut and Ani-mata Hut. Please respect the local ecosystem, as much of the mountain is a protected wildlife zone.
There are several spots near Mount Moriyosi to enjoy nature. The Ani Ski Resort is a popular destination, and nearby Taihei-ko (Komata Gorge) offers beautiful scenery. At the foot of the mountain, you can visit the Moriyoshi Dam Information Center or relax at the Moriyoshi Onsen 'Chiisana Mori no Yu' hot spring facility after your hike or sightseeing. Depending on the season, you may also enjoy the natural beauty of falls like Anotaki.

Proper preparation is essential for a safe experience. If visiting in winter for the frost viewing or using the ski resort, heavy winter clothing and anti-freeze gear are mandatory. For summer hikers, comfortable trekking gear is recommended. Please respect the rules of the National Wildlife Protection Area: do not pick plants or disturb the wildlife. While there are mountain huts available, please follow all local rules and carry all your trash back with you to preserve the pristine environment.
