Morito Shrine (Morito Daimyojin) is a historic sanctuary located in Hayama Town, Miura District, Kanagawa Prefecture, where history and nature exist in perfect harmony. Situated near the beautiful coastline, it has long been a place of worship for the local community. The shrine holds deep historical significance related to Minamoto no Yoritomo, the founder of the Kamakura Shogunate. Today, it remains a vital spiritual center where people come to pray for fertility, safe childbirth, and blessings for infants (Omiyamairi).
The history of the main shrine dates back to 1180 (Jisho 4). It is said that Minamoto no Yoritomo invited the deity from Mishima Taisha in Shizuoka to establish this sacred site. Through his deep devotion to Mishima Myojin, Yoritomo sought to build a strong foundation for the Kamakura Shogunate in this region. Consequently, the shrine became a place of worship for successive Shoguns and served as a crucial site for the Miura clan, who ruled the area. The grounds also feature monuments honoring figures who helped introduce Hayama as a seaside resort during the early Meiji era, linking the site to the modernization of Japan.
The shrine grounds are dotted with many monuments and cultural assets of great value. A must-see is the 'Morito Daimyojin Byakushin' (Juniper tree), a designated natural monument of Hayama, as well as the legendary 'Senkan Matsu' tree associated with Minamoto no Yoritomo and Wada Yoshimori. Additionally, the monuments honoring Dr. Berthelot and Minister Martino, who promoted Hayama as a resort in the Meiji era, tell the story of the area's modern development. Visitors can also discover various poem monuments left by poets and historical figures, offering a different perspective of history with every visit.

During the New Year's period (Hatsumode), the shrine becomes a vibrant center of Japanese tradition as many locals gather to pray for the new year.
