This site was established in 1861 as a branch of the Kamihouga family, who laid the foundation for wood wax production in Uchiko and became central to its development. The complex preserves essential production facilities such as the 'Kamaba' (boiler area), storage warehouses, and tool sheds, serving as a precious museum that illustrates how industry and daily life were deeply intertwined during that era.
The Kamihouga family played a pivotal role in the prosperity of the wood wax industry in Uchiko. The main house was completed in 1894, during the peak of the local wax-making industry. A unique feature of this residence is that it functioned not just as a home, but as a production hub. Today, the site is managed and preserved by the town as a vital piece of local heritage. Both the architecture itself and the displayed wax-making tools are designated as Important Tangible Folk Cultural Properties, symbolizing the rich industrial culture of Japan.

We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes for your visit. Small personal belongings (excluding valuables) can be stored at the reception desk. Smoking is strictly prohibited on the premises. Regarding pets, they are allowed in the free zones (excluding the cafe area) if they are on a leash, but please note that pets other than service animals are generally not permitted in the paid exhibition zones. Photography is allowed inside the museum, but please check with staff if a special exhibition is being held, as photography may be restricted in certain exhibition areas.
