The Mojiko Retro Observation Deck is a premier viewing facility located in the Mojiko Retro district of Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture. Situated 103 meters above the ground on the 31st floor of a high-rise residential building, it offers an unobstructed, wide-angle panorama of the sea and sky. Visitors can enjoy the serene scenery of the Kanmon Straits, the historic architecture of the surrounding area, and the distant Ganryujima Island, famous for its historical significance.
The building housing the observation deck is part of a high-rise complex completed in 1999. The Mojiko district itself has a rich history as a thriving international trade hub. The area is characterized by many buildings from the Meiji and Taisho eras, which have been preserved beautifully. From this elevated vantage point, you can witness the unique coexistence of historical landscapes and modern high-rise architecture that defines contemporary Mojiko.

The greatest attraction is the panoramic view of the Kanmon Straits from a height of 103 meters. During the day, you can enjoy the striking contrast between the blue sea and the sky; at dusk, a beautiful sunset unfolds; and at night, a magical view of the illuminated cityscape and the reflecting sea surface awaits. Additionally, digital telescopes (available for 300 JPY) are installed in the facility, allowing you to observe distant islands and maritime activities with much greater clarity.
During the daytime, the view is most spectacular on clear days when the blue sea and sky are vivid. In the evening, the atmosphere becomes romantic with the lights of the city and the Kanmon Straits creating a soft glow. Since the facility is open until 22:00, it is an excellent destination for a post-dinner stroll. Regardless of the season, the view is exceptionally clear on days with good weather.
At the observation deck, you can experience a sense of openness and tranquility while observing the natural changes of the environment. Using the digital telescope allows for a detailed look at distant landmarks. The space is also an ideal location for photography, using the expansive scenery as a breathtaking backdrop for your travel photos.
The area beneath the observation deck is the Mojiko Retro district, which is home to numerous historical buildings and restaurants. The facility is within walking distance of JR Mojiko Station, making it a common itinerary to stroll through the retro streets before ascending to enjoy the view from above. Cultural landmarks such as the Former Mojiko Mitsui Club and the Fumiko Hayashi Memorial are also scattered nearby.
While the building is climate-controlled, the area near the windows may feel different depending on the season, so please dress appropriately. Payments can be made via cash or credit card. If you wish to use the digital telescope, an additional 300 JPY is required. While English signage availability may vary, the environment is generally quiet and respectful. No advanced reservations are required; you can enter directly on the day of your visit.
