The Mogami River Bank Thousand Cherry Blossoms is a historic and scenic cherry blossom destination located along the Mogami River in Nagai City, Yamagata Prefecture. The banks are lined with Somei Yoshino cherry trees, creating a soft pink landscape that harmonizes beautifully with the flowing river. The left bank (city side) features historic trees planted during the Taisho era, while the right bank is also adorned with blossoms, offering a serene and picturesque view that captures the essence of Japanese spring.
The cherry trees here carry a rich historical legacy. The trees on the left bank were planted in 1915 (Taisho 4) to commemorate the accession of the Emperor, with approximately 300 trees spread across a 2km stretch. The trees on the right bank were planted later in 1938. Today, many of these trees have exceeded 100 years of age, and the landscape is carefully preserved as a vital part of the local heritage and cultural identity.
