Mizusawa Racecourse is a premier horse racing facility located in Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture. It is renowned for its unique ability to offer visitors a dual experience: the high-energy excitement of horse racing and the serene beauty of the surrounding natural landscape. The facility is framed by majestic mountains: Mt. Saihodai to the north, Mt. Kurikoma to the west, Mt. Tsuna to the south, and the Tane Yamagahara plateau to the east. On clear days, visitors may even catch a glimpse of the iconic Mt. Iwate in the distance. The most spectacular season is spring, when approximately 150 Yoshino cherry trees bloom around the track, creating a breathtaking scenery that attracts many visitors.
As a facility deeply rooted in the local community, Mizusawa Racecourse serves as a vital center for regional leisure and culture. Its location is perfectly harmonized with the surrounding mountains and natural environment, making it more than just a sports venue. The seasonal changes, particularly the cherry blossom season, allow the racecourse to function as a scenic destination for nature lovers, bridging the gap between traditional sports and seasonal aesthetics.

The most significant scenic point is the cherry blossom avenue located along the front straight of the track. Every April, the roughly 150 Yoshino cherry trees reach full bloom, enveloping the entire racecourse in a soft pink landscape. During this period, the area is often open for general viewing, attracting many people who come specifically for the blossoms rather than just the racing. Additionally, the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, such as Mt. Saihodai and Mt. Kurikoma, provide a sense of tranquility and grandeur unique to this location.
The absolute best time to visit is April. By timing your visit with the peak bloom of the Yoshino cherry trees, you can enjoy the breathtaking scenery alongside the races. During special public viewing periods, the facility is often accessible between 9:30 AM and 4:30 PM, so we recommend checking the official schedule in advance. Even outside of spring, the changing colors of the surrounding mountains offer beautiful views throughout the year.
Visitors can experience the intense excitement of local horse racing up close. The tension of the races provides a thrilling atmosphere, which is beautifully contrasted by the peaceful natural surroundings. In the spring, a leisurely stroll through the cherry blossom area is highly recommended. To enhance your experience, learning the basic rules and flow of the races will allow you to fully immerse yourself in the local racing culture.
The area around Mizusawa Racecourse is filled with spots to experience the rich nature of Oshu City. For instance, the 'Isawa Direct Sales Center Ajisai' is a great place to encounter local food culture through seasonal agricultural products. The nearby mountains are also excellent for hiking and nature observation, allowing you to plan a route that combines a visit to the racecourse with a nature-filled day out.
