Mizumoto Park is a large-scale metropolitan park located in Katsushika City, Tokyo. It is characterized as a 'waterfront park' centered around the Koaidame reservoir, offering a beautiful landscape of water and lush greenery. The park serves as a vital urban oasis where visitors can experience a diverse ecosystem of native and cultivated plants. The vast grounds are equipped with various facilities including a large lawn area, an aquatic plant garden, camping sites, BBQ areas, and an adventure playground for children.
The history of this area is deeply tied to the water management of the region. Originally part of the Furu-Tone River area, the landscape was shaped by the 'Koaidame' reservoir, which was managed by local residents after the river's course was altered during the Edo period under the direction of Tokugawa Iemitsu. While the development of the Mizumoto green space began around 1940, it was interrupted by the events of World War II. Following the war, the park was developed according to urban planning and officially opened on April 1, 1965. It has long been recognized for its balance of nature conservation and urban development.
There are numerous spots that offer different expressions depending on the season. The park is particularly popular during the cherry blossom season and the iris blooming season. Key attractions include the Aquatic Plant Garden, which showcases various water-based flora, the Great Lawn for relaxing, and the Adventure Playground for kids. With approximately 19,100 large trees, the park maintains a dense, forest-like environment that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding water landscape.
The scenery changes dramatically with the seasons. In spring, the cherry blossoms along the Sakura Embankment (Sakura-tsutsumi) create a stunning pink landscape, while early summer brings the vibrant colors of irises. The park is open 24 hours a day, though facility usage is best during daylight hours.
