Mizuhashi Hashi Matsuri is a traditional festival held every July in the Mizuhashi area of Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture. The most distinctive feature of this festival is the 'Nagashi-bi' (floating fire) ritual, which is rare to see elsewhere in Japan. The lights floating on the river surface create a mystical and dreamlike landscape amidst the darkness. As the festival reaches its climax, spectacular fireworks illuminate the night sky, allowing visitors to enjoy both the solemn atmosphere of a fire ritual and the high-energy excitement of a celebration.
The origins of this festival date back to the completion of a bridge over the Mizuhashi River in 1869 (Meiji 2). It is said to have begun as a ceremony to celebrate the completion of the wooden bridge and to pray for the safety and prosperity of the river. Traditionally, cotton soaked in oil was placed on wooden boards (roofing material) to create lights, which were then floated down the river. While the methods of securing materials have changed over time, the traditional spirit of 'floating fire' has been carefully preserved and passed down through generations.
The highlight of the festival is the combination of 'Nagashi-bi' (floating fire) and the fireworks display. Accompanied by the sounds of traditional flutes and drums played by local youths, dozens of small boats move along the river, creating a solemn and beautiful scene as the lights are sent toward the sea. The dynamic, colorful fireworks that fill the sky are truly overwhelming. The sight of red, pink, gold, green, and white sparks dancing across the night sky of Mizuhishi is a unique experience that can only be found here.
The festival is held annually in July. The main events take place from evening through the night. A typical schedule includes the 'Urやす no Mai' (Dance of Peace) around 19:00, the 'Eco Fire Floating' around 19:30, and the large-scale fireworks display starting around 20:00. Since this is a nighttime event, please be prepared for darkness. The most beautiful time to witness the brilliance of the fire and fireworks is during the climax after 20:00 when night has fully fallen.
Visitors can observe the 'Nagashi-bi' from the riverbanks, watching the countless lights drift along the water's surface. You can feel the ancient culture of fire through the rhythmic sounds of traditional music. Depending on the year, there may also be local stage performances or song events, allowing you to feel the vibrant energy of the local community.
