Mizugatsuka Park is located halfway up Mt. Fuji in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture, at an altitude of 1,450 meters. Known as the second station (Nigo-me), it offers a sense of scale and proximity to the mountain that is vastly different from viewing it from a distance. The park preserves rich natural beauty that changes its expression with every season. In summer, it plays a vital role as a base for Mt. Fuji climbers and a shuttle bus stop for those heading toward the fifth station.
Directly in front of the park lies the Hoei Crater, formed by the massive Hoei eruption in 1707. The presence of this crater serves as a striking visual testament to the fact that Mt. Fuji remains an active volcano. This environment provides a rare opportunity to observe both the wonders of nature and the historical traces of volcanic activity up close.
The greatest charm of the park is the unobstructed panoramic view of Mt. Fuji. Specifically, seeing the rugged terrain of the Hoei Crater from this close is an experience unique to this location. The park also features well-maintained cross-country courses, allowing visitors to enjoy sports while feeling the fresh, cool mountain air. Furthermore, if you head toward the 'Fureai Hiroba' area, you can reach the Koshikizuka Observatory, where you can gaze upon the majestic silhouette of Mt. Fuji without any obstructions.
You can enjoy different scenery throughout the four seasons. From spring to summer, the landscape is filled with lush greenery, and the area is bustling during the Mt. Fuji climbing season. In autumn, you can enjoy the changing colors of the leaves, while in winter, the 'Snow Play Area' opens up. The winter season is particularly popular for families, as children enjoy sledding in the snow. However, please note that temperatures are low from December to March, and due to snow accumulation, you should be prepared for sudden weather changes.
Mizugatsuka Park offers a variety of outdoor activities. Typical experiences include cross-country skiing on maintained paths or simply admiring the view from the observation decks. During the winter season, sledding at the 'Snow Play Area' is a highly popular activity. Additionally, at the adjacent 'Mori no Eki Fujisan' (Forest Station), you can experience local food culture and purchase regional specialties and Mt. Fuji-themed goods.
The 'Mori no Eki Fujisan' facility within the park provides a place for rest, meals, and souvenir shopping. The Koshikizuka Observatory is also located about a 10-15 minute walk from the park, serving as a crucial spot for viewing the grand landscape of Mt. Fuji. During the summer, many climbers use the Fuji Skyline to access the area as a gateway to their ascent.
