Mizubasho Park (Fureai Shizen no Sato) is a lush, natural park located southeast of Gosen City, Niigata Prefecture, at the foot of Mt. Sugana. The park was opened in March 1996, utilizing a wetland area where Mizubasho flowers have naturally grown for generations. Spanning 2.1 hectares, the area is home to approximately 30,000 Mizubasho plants. The sight of these white flowers emerging alongside the melting snow is a celebrated symbol of spring's arrival in the region.
This area has long been preserved as a rich wetland habitat where Mizubasho grows wild. To protect this natural landscape while providing a space for people to connect with nature, the area was developed as "Fureai Shizen no Sato" (Nature Interaction Village) in 1996. It plays a vital role in preserving the local natural environment and passing it down to future generations.
The primary attraction is the massive colony of Mizubasho flowers in spring. These perennial plants are characterized by large white spathes (leaf-like structures) that cover the wetland as the snow melts. In early April, mountain cherry blossoms (Yamazakura) often bloom simultaneously, creating a stunning color palette of white Mizubasho and soft pink cherry blossoms. A 480-meter long wooden boardwalk allows visitors to observe the delicate plants and the wetland ecosystem up close without disturbing the environment.
The peak season is from late March to early April. During this window, the white Mizubasho flowers bloom in unison as the snow recedes. On clear spring days, the contrast between the white flowers and the bright blue sky is exceptionally beautiful. While the air can still be chilly during this transition period, the crisp, clean atmosphere makes for a refreshing experience.
The main activity is a peaceful nature walk along the well-maintained wooden paths. Visitors can observe the intricate details of the Mizubasho—small green flowers nestled within the large white bracts—and enjoy the changing seasons in a tranquil setting.
Located at the base of Mt. Sugana, the park is surrounded by breathtaking natural scenery. There are various other sightseeing spots and nature-based facilities throughout Gosen City that offer seasonal experiences.
There is no entrance fee or parking fee, so no cash or card payment is required to enter the park.

No advance reservations are required to visit the park.
Since March and April are the snowmelt seasons, temperatures can be low and winds can be cold. We recommend wearing warm clothing and comfortable walking shoes. As you will be walking on a wooden boardwalk over a wetland, please watch your step.
Photography of the natural scenery is welcome, but please follow local etiquette and avoid touching or damaging the plants.
While the park features a wooden boardwalk, the terrain is natural and may include uneven surfaces or slight vibrations.
The parking area is designed for standard passenger vehicles. It is not suitable for large vehicles or trucks, and there is limited space for turning around.
