The Chapel on the Water is a breathtaking chapel located within Hoshino Resorts Tomamu in Shimukappu Village, Hokkaido. Designed by the world-renowned architect Tadao Ando, the structure is defined by the concept of "carving out" nature. The site is enclosed by a massive L-shaped concrete wall amidst a birch forest, creating a sanctuary that feels completely separated from the outside world. Elements such as water, light, wind, and greenery are integrated into the architecture, providing a unique atmosphere that envelops visitors in a sense of profound tranquility.
This architectural masterpiece received the 31st BCS Prize in 1990, marking it as a significant work in modern Japanese architecture. Based on Ando's philosophy of creating spaces that capture nature as it is through human will, the chapel serves not just as a wedding venue, but as a space for dialogue with nature. Its striking aesthetic has also drawn international attention, including being featured in music videos by artists like BoA.
The most striking feature is the chapel's structure. Surrounded by glass, the space directly reflects the surrounding natural scenery. A shallow pool of water (about 15cm deep) sits at the altar, where the reflection of the cross dances with the light and wind. Additionally, four concrete crosses are positioned on the roof, allowing sunlight to pour through skylights and create a dramatic play of light and shadow within the interior. The architectural progression from the approach to the inner sanctuary is a highlight in itself.
The chapel reveals different expressions depending on the time of day and season. The morning is highly recommended for a "Morning Stroll," where you can feel the crisp air and hear the birdsong. In the evening, the space becomes mystical as candlelight reflects on the water. The summer months, when the birch forest is lush and green, are particularly beautiful. Even on rainy days, the sound of droplets hitting the water adds to the meditative silence.
Special programs are available to experience the beauty of the architecture. For instance, the "Morning Chapel Visit" allows you to spend quiet time amidst natural light. At night, candle-lit settings create a magical atmosphere of light and shadow. Please note that as this is a venue for weddings, it is important to check the schedule in advance, as access may be restricted during ceremonies.
