Miyajima is an island located in Hiroshima Prefecture, home to the UNESCO World Heritage site, Itsukushima Shrine. Known as one of the three most scenic views in Japan, the sight of the vermilion-colored shrine buildings appearing to float on the sea, anchored by the iconic Great Torii Gate, captivates all who visit. The entire island has been revered as a sacred place throughout history, offering a unique landscape where nature and religious architecture blend seamlessly.
Since ancient times, the entire island has been revered as a sacred land. Because the land itself was considered too sacred for human habitation, the shrine was constructed over the sea. The Itsukushima Shrine complex consists of various structures including the Main Hall, Kyaku-sha, Asaza-ya, Haraedo, Takabutai, Hirabutai, the Left and Right Gates, Tenjin-sha, Noh Stage, and several bridges such as the Soribashi, Nagabashi, Yosui-bashi, and Naisui-bashi. These structures are historical legacies that embody a profound respect for nature.
The most iconic symbol of Miyajima is the wooden 'Great Torii Gate' standing in the sea. This is a Ryobu-style torii gate. Surrounding the shrine, you will find other historical structures such as the Senjokaku, the five-story pagoda, and the Tahoto pagoda. Depending on the tide, the view changes significantly: at high tide, the shrine appears to float gracefully on the water, while at low tide, you can walk closer to the structures. The landscape offers a different expression depending on the time of day.
The scenery of Miyajima changes drastically depending on the tide cycles. During high tide, you can witness the mystical sight of the shrine floating on the ocean. During low tide, it is possible to walk right up to the base of the Great Torii Gate. To enjoy a more tranquil atmosphere and avoid crowds, visiting in the early morning or late afternoon is highly recommended. Generally, the area becomes quite crowded with tourists between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
Beyond viewing historical architecture, you can enjoy strolling through the local shopping streets to try local delicacies like 'Momiji Manju' (maple-shaped manju cakes). Exploring the natural environment at the foot of Mount Misen is also a wonderful way to spend your time. Observing the shifting scenery dictated by the tides and the changing seasons is a quintessential Miyajima experience.
Access to Miyajima is typically via ferry from Hiroshima. From JR Miyajimaguchi Station, you can take the JR West Miyajima Ferry or the Miyajima Matsudai Kisen. The ferry ride itself is a beautiful part of the sightseeing journey. The surrounding area is rich with historical temples, shrines, and beautiful natural scenery.
As this is a sacred site for Shinto worship, visitors are asked to dress appropriately and respect the religious atmosphere. Since you may encounter sand, uneven surfaces, or stairs, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and bringing rain gear if necessary. Please also be aware that certain fees, such as the Miyajima Visiting Tax, may apply, so it is helpful to check in advance for a smooth visit.
