Iwa Shrine is a historic sanctuary located in Iriuma-cho, Hitachi City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Situated at the foot of Mount Iwa—the oldest sacred mountain in the ancient Hitachi Province—it possesses a ritual history spanning approximately 3,000 years since the Jomon period. It is believed that 188 deities reside within the shrine grounds, creating a sacred space where nature and spirituality are one. The shrine is also renowned for its stunning seasonal scenery, featuring beautiful displays of Lysimachia (primrose), Rhododendrons, and vibrant autumn foliage.
This site is a place of great prestige, mentioned in the 'Hitachi no Kuni Fudoki,' one of Japan's oldest historical records. Archaeological artifacts from the late Jomon period have been excavated from Mount Iwa and the shrine grounds, proving it has been revered as a holy site for millennia. It is a place where you can feel the essence of Japanese spiritual culture, characterized by the long-standing tradition of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism and a deep reverence for nature. The main hall enshrines deities such as Kunitokotachi-no-mikoto and Okuninushi-no-mikoto.
The shrine grounds feature the 'Sanbon Sugi' (Three Sacred Cedars), majestic trees estimated to be 600 years old. Visitors can explore various structures, including the Ro-mon (Great Ox-King Gate), the Kabire Shrine on the main approach, and the Satsu Shrine Chugu on the back approach. The path leads toward the summit of Mount Iwa, offering a walk through rich natural scenery. On certain occasions, there are rare opportunities to witness the public exhibition of the Dainichi Nyorai statue.
Iwa Shrine reveals a different face with every season. From mid-March to early April, you can enjoy the blooming of Lysimachia, and from mid-April to early May, the Rhododendrons come into flower, signaling the arrival of spring. The autumn colors are spectacular, and winter offers a time of profound silence in the crisp, clear air. It is best to visit during daylight hours, typically between 9:00 and 17:00 when the shrine office is open. Notably, a special night-time visit is possible starting from 3:30 AM on January 1st.
A popular activity at Iwa Shrine is collecting Goshuin (sacred temple/shrine stamps). In addition to the standard Iwa Shrine and Kabire Shrine stamps, limited edition designs are sometimes available depending on the season (please note that on weekdays, stamps may be provided as written slips rather than hand-brushed). For those seeking a more physical connection with nature, hiking up Mount Iwa is highly recommended for spiritual fulfillment.
Nearby attractions include Kamine Park & Zoo, where you can interact with animals, Kirara no Sato for agricultural experiences, and the historic Nishiyama Goten. These make the area an excellent stop during a scenic drive or a day trip.
Please observe proper shrine etiquette during your visit. If you plan to hike Mount Iwa, please note the time limit: hiking is permitted from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and you must complete your descent by 5:00 PM. We highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and active clothing, as there are many stairs and uneven paths. While parking is available (Lots P1–P4) and bus access is possible, please check for availability during events or peak seasons.
