Mitsukejima is an uninhabited island designated as a natural monument in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture. It is characterized by a striking landscape of steep, white cliffs rising from the sea, topped with lush green vegetation. The island is approximately 158.5 meters long, 45.3 meters wide, and reaches an elevation of 28.8 meters. The dynamic topography, sculpted by the power of nature, creates a harmonious and breathtaking view against the calm surrounding waters. During low tide, stepping stones may appear in the sea, offering a rare and precious opportunity to approach the island closely.
The name "Mitsukejima" (meaning 'discovered island') carries deep historical significance. According to legend, it is the very spot where the Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi (Kukai) first sighted land when traveling from Sado Island to this region. Another legend tells of the deity Kashiharihiko-kami, who is said to have discovered the island upon his descent to this land. For centuries, the island has been revered both as a natural wonder and a site of spiritual significance. Historically, a nearby rock known as "Kojima" was part of this scenic set, but it has since disappeared due to natural phenomena.
The most breathtaking feature of Mitsukejima is the massive monolithic rock floating on the sea surface. The near-vertical cliffs, carved by waves over countless years, serve as a symbol of nature's sculptural beauty. The top of the island is home to native plants such as Ardisia crenata and Machilus japonicus, creating a beautiful contrast between the white rock face and the deep green foliage. The island's expression changes with the weather and time of day: under clear skies, the white cliffs glow against the blue, while at sunset, the island becomes a majestic silhouette against an orange sky. At night, the view of the island under the Milky Way is a truly celestial experience.
While the natural scenery can be enjoyed year-round, we highly recommend visiting during low tide. During these times, you may see the rocks and the path leading toward the island that are usually submerged. During the day, the bright sunlight highlights the texture of the rocks and the vibrancy of the greenery. At dusk, the silhouette of the island against the setting sun offers a serene and contemplative atmosphere. Additionally, the area is excellent for stargazing, offering a mystical view of the Milky Way in the night sky.
The area surrounding Mitsukejima is a well-maintained scenic spot rich in nature. Nearby, you can find beaches, campsites, and the "Tojiso" hot spring facility, allowing for a relaxing stay immersed in nature. Walking along the coastline and observing the natural formations is a precious experience for travelers seeking tranquility.
