The Mitoyagawa Sakura Trees consist of a beautiful 2km stretch of cherry blossoms lining both sides of the Mitoya River, flowing at the foot of the Mitoya Castle ruins in Unnan City, Shimane Prefecture. As spring arrives, the riverbanks are blanketed in blossoms, captivating all who visit. The area is particularly lively during the peak blooming season in mid-April. At night, the scenery becomes truly mystical as traditional lanterns (bonbori) illuminate the trees, creating a romantic atmosphere. The harmony between the flowing river and the cherry blossoms offers a peaceful escape from daily life.
This area holds significant historical value, being situated at the foot of the former Mitoya Castle ruins. The landscape has been carefully preserved and cherished by the local community, with cherry trees being planted to maintain the natural beauty of the region. While the landscape is dominated by the famous Yoshino cherry, it also includes rare varieties that symbolize the local natural heritage. This blend of history and nature makes it a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike.
The endless tunnel of cherry blossoms along the riverbanks is the primary attraction for walkers. While most of the trees are Yoshino cherries, the left bank near the Mitoya Castle ruins features the rare 'Gyoko' variety, which produces greenish-yellow blossoms. The Gyoko blooms approximately two weeks later than the standard Yoshino, allowing visitors to enjoy a different side of the season if they time their visit slightly later. Additionally, the night illumination creates a poetic scene where the light reflects off the river surface, offering a much more emotional experience than daytime.
The best time to visit is mid-April when the Yoshino cherry blossoms are in full bloom. If you wish to see something truly unique, aim for the blooming period of the Gyoko (about two weeks after the Yoshino peak) to see the rare greenish blossoms. For the best experience, we recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours for a peaceful stroll, or during the evening to witness the magical night illuminations.
The area around the Mitoya River is well-maintained as a riverside park, making it ideal for various outdoor activities. You can enjoy a relaxing walk along the embankments, play light sports like ground golf or gateball, or even enjoy water play in the designated areas. The presence of gazebos (休憩所) also makes it a perfect spot for a picnic with lunch boxes (obento) while soaking in the natural surroundings.
Near the river, you can explore the historical remains of the Mitoya Castle ruins. The National Route 54 runs alongside the cherry blossom path, making it an easy stop during a scenic drive through the beautiful nature of Shimane.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended, as the riverside paths and park areas may have uneven surfaces. If you plan to have a picnic, please bring your own drinks and snacks. As this is a natural public space, please remember to take your trash home with you and respect the environment.
