Misato Shibazakura Park is a vast, beautiful park located adjacent to the Ogai-damai area in Misato City, Saitama Prefecture. The park's most spectacular feature is the blooming of approximately 260,000 moss phlox (shibazakura) plants, which cover about 2.9 hectares of the landscape. The way the red, white, and pink flowers form undulating patterns and swirls is inspired by the legendary 'Orihime's celestial robe,' creating a visually stunning and colorful display. The park is a place where the changing expressions of nature can be enjoyed throughout the seasons.
This region has a long history of coexistence with the natural waterside environment. The landscape design of the park reflects traditional Japanese aesthetic sensibilities, where the arrangement of the moss phlox is used to create patterns that express the seasonal beauty of Japan. The area is well-maintained to allow citizens and tourists to interact with nature, incorporating features such as a natural observation garden and iris fields, while preserving the local ecosystem.
The park features several areas designed for enjoying diverse natural elements. The most famous sight is the massive 'carpet' of moss phlox covering the vast grounds. Along the Ogai-damai, visitors can find a natural observation garden and iris fields, perfect for observing aquatic plants and local wildlife. Additionally, an observation deck is available, allowing visitors to look down upon the expansive landscape and the colorful arrangement of seasonal flowers from a high vantage point. The park also features well-maintained paths for jogging and walking, making it a great spot for both exercise and relaxation.
The peak season is from early April to early May, coinciding with the time when cherry blossoms (Sakura) are in bloom. During this period, you can witness a beautiful harmony between the cherry blossoms (such as Somei Yoshino, Yaezakura, and Oshima Sakura) and the moss phlox. While the colors are most vibrant under the bright daytime sun, the view of the sunset over the Ogai-damai area in the late afternoon is also a unique and beautiful experience. The flower garden also offers different botanical displays depending on the season.
Visitors can enjoy various forms of relaxation and recreation within the park. There is a BBQ area with 68 designated plots, allowing you to enjoy meals surrounded by nature; these areas are equipped with solar lighting for safety. Activities range from jogging and walking to observing biological life in the natural observation garden or enjoying the view from the water terrace. During the 'Misato Shibazakura Festival' in spring, the park becomes even more lively with local agricultural products, food stalls, and food trucks, offering a taste of local culture.
The park is situated right next to the Ogai-damai, providing a beautiful waterside view. The nearby Mizumoto Park continues the theme of abundant nature. The area is easily accessible from major transport hubs like Misato Station and Misato-Chuo Station (Tsukuba Express), making it a part of a larger route for exploring the natural environments of the Saitama region.
Since the park is quite large, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you plan to use the BBQ facilities, please bring your own necessary tools and food. When viewing the moss phlox, please stay on the designated paths to avoid damaging the plants. Additionally, please be cautious of insects (such as redback spiders) in grassy areas or near the underside of benches, as they have occasionally been reported in the area.
