Misasa Onsen is a historic hot spring area located in Misasa Town, San'in Region, Tottori Prefecture. Its most distinctive feature is its high concentration of radon, a very rare characteristic among hot springs worldwide. The townscape is characterized by traditional Japanese ryokans lining both sides of the Mitoku River, with a charming stone-paved main street lined with local eateries and souvenir shops. Beyond simple sightseeing, this area has long been a destination for therapeutic purposes. Even today, it is widely visited by those seeking "modern Toji" (hot spring cure/healing) to rejuvenate both mind and body.
The history of Misasa Onsen is profound, with over 850 years of tradition. One legend dates back to the end of the Heian period: it is said that a retainer of Minamoto no Yoshitomo, Okubo Samanoshun, discovered the hot spring after encountering a white wolf while visiting Mitoku-san Sanbutsu-ji Temple. The name "Misasa" (meaning 'three mornings') stems from the belief that by the third morning, one's ailments would vanish, making it a legendary place for health and healing. Since the Meiji era, the area has also been a favorite retreat for many famous writers and intellectuals.

There are several spots that captivate visitors. One of the most iconic is the "Kawaraburo" (Riverside Bath), located by the banks of the Mitoku River, offering an open-air experience amidst stunning natural scenery. The stone-paved streets in the center of the town offer a delightful atmosphere for walking and exploring. Additionally, the "Kabu-yu" spring, beloved by locals, provides a quiet, historical setting to experience the essence of the hot spring. These spots allow you to feel the daily rhythm and deep history of the region.
Misasa Onsen shows different beautiful faces throughout the seasons. Spring and autumn are particularly pleasant for strolling through the town while feeling the changing seasons. The Kawaraburo is available 24 hours a day (please note that cleaning occurs on the mornings of odd-numbered days), allowing you to enjoy the scenery at any time. At night, the lights of the hot spring town create a deeply nostalgic and tranquil atmosphere, offering a peaceful contrast to the daytime.
Beyond soaking in the hot springs, there are various ways to enjoy your stay. You can explore the local shopping streets to find regional specialties or enjoy local delicacies at nearby restaurants. For those who wish to explore the wider area, rental bicycles (for a fee) are available at the tourist information center. Engaging with the local history and culture through these activities will make your stay even more meaningful.
