Minokura Kogen Flower Fields is a vast floral landscape located at an altitude of 650 meters, situated on the former slopes of the Minokura Ski Resort in Kitakata City, Fukushima Prefecture. Spanning approximately 8 hectares, this area undergoes a dramatic transformation with each season. In spring, the landscape is blanketed in a vibrant yellow carpet of rapeseed flowers (nanohana). From summer to autumn, it hosts one of the largest sunflower displays in the Tohoku region, featuring approximately 2.5 million sunflowers. The open scenery offers a refreshing view of the entire Aizu Basin.
The site was developed by repurposing the slopes of the former Minokura Ski Resort. By utilizing the natural topography of the mountain, the area provides an unobstructed, sweeping view of the surrounding landscape. It has become a beloved destination where visitors can experience the profound beauty of nature in harmony with the changing seasons, celebrating the natural way the terrain meets the sky.
The greatest appeal is the dramatic change in scenery throughout the year. In spring (mid-to-late May), the hills are covered in a brilliant yellow sea of rapeseed blossoms. In summer (mid-to-late August), the landscape is dominated by an immense number of sunflowers, creating a stunning contrast against the blue sky and green mountains. Additionally, on the scenic lookout hill, you will find the 'Bell of Happiness.' This bell is inspired by the symbolic meaning of the flowers and is a popular spot where visitors can ring the bell to make a wish.
There are distinct peak times to visit depending on the flowers you wish to see. The rapeseed blossom season occurs in mid-to-late May, characterized by the rolling yellow hills. The sunflower season peaks in mid-to-late August. We recommend visiting during bright daylight hours, as the sunlight enhances the vivid colors of the petals and makes for excellent photography. Please note that blooming periods may vary slightly depending on weather conditions, so checking local updates is advised.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll through the vast fields, surrounded by the scents and colors of seasonal flowers. On the lookout hill, you can experience the cultural tradition of ringing the 'Bell of Happiness.' The area also features leisure elements like sunflower mazes and observation decks. The gentle slopes of the former ski resort make it an ideal place for a scenic walk while breathing in the fresh mountain air.
Minokura Kogen Flower Fields is nestled within the beautiful natural environment of the Aizu region. The nearby Minokura Ski Resort area also offers winter sports during the colder months. Furthermore, Kitakata City is famous for its historical architecture and delicious local cuisine, making this a convenient base for exploring the wider Fukushima area.
As this is a high-altitude plateau, preparation for the weather is essential. Even in spring or summer, temperatures can fluctuate, so bringing a light jacket is recommended. Due to the large scale of the site, comfortable walking shoes are a must.
