Minatogawa Hiranari Jutaku Gai (also known as Minatogawa Stateside Town) is a unique area in Urasoe City, Okinawa, that preserves a strong American aesthetic. The area is characterized by rows of single-story, white concrete houses built between the 1950s and 1960s as housing for US military personnel. Today, many of these structures have been beautifully renovated into a vibrant commercial district featuring high-end cafes, boutique gift shops, art galleries, and bakeries.
The most striking feature is the street layout, where roads are named after US states, such as "California St." and "Florida St." Walking through these streets feels like stepping into a foreign seaside town, offering a different kind of charm compared to the typical tropical beach resorts. It is often described as the "other side of Okinawa"—a blend of local history and modern, cosmopolitan vibes.
The history of this area dates back to the post-war US administration period. It was originally developed to provide housing for US military members and their families. The terrain was leveled to create a residential area, resulting in approximately 70 houses. The architecture is unique, using reinforced concrete walls rather than pillars to ensure spacious living areas.
After serving as rental housing for local residents through the 1980s and 90s, the area underwent a transformation around the year 2000. Under the name "Minatogawa Stateside Town," the neighborhood saw a wave of renovations that attracted creative entrepreneurs. Today, it stands as a cultural hub where American nostalgia meets contemporary Okinawan creativity. The area also retains a sense of tradition, with a small sacred site (Utaki) still present near a local stream.
