Minato Koen is a beautiful park located in the heart of Kashima Port, one of the world's leading excavated artificial ports, situated in Kamisu City, Ibaraki Prefecture. The park is built within a Y-shaped harbor structure, creating a unique landscape where the boundary between the water and the land is clearly felt. The vast area provides a profound sense of openness, making it a popular destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. It is an ideal spot for daily strolls, family picnics, or as a scenic destination during a road trip.
The area has developed around the large-scale artificial port of Kashima. The park is designed to serve both as a functional part of the port infrastructure and as a peaceful recreational space for citizens. Due to a naming rights agreement, the park's official common name is "Heisei Bussan Park Minato Koen" for the five-year period from fiscal year 2023 to 2027. It serves as a local landmark where the industrial culture of the port harmonizes beautifully with the natural scenery.

The greatest charm of Minato Koen is undoubtedly its "waterfront scenery." Thanks to its location within the Y-shaped harbor structure, visitors can feel the dynamic atmosphere of the water from almost any vantage point. The vast grounds feature well-maintained walking paths and lush green areas, allowing for a slow and peaceful pace of life. While the observation tower was once a popular spot for panoramic views, its use is currently restricted for safety reasons. However, the outdoor areas of the park remain fully open, allowing you to enjoy the expansive and refreshing views.
The park is accessible 24 hours a day, offering different expressions depending on the time. During the day, you can enjoy the sparkling water and vibrant greenery under bright sunlight, making it perfect for family outings. At dusk, you can experience the beautiful "magic hour" as the colors of the sky reflect off the water's surface. Please note that certain seasonal events, such as the winter illumination of the observation tower, have been suspended due to the current restrictions on the tower' 1s use. We recommend checking local conditions before your visit.

The main activities here are "strolling" and "refreshing" while feeling the connection between nature and the port. Walking through the vast grounds allows you to relax while breathing in the fresh sea breeze. Since the area is easily accessible by car, it is highly recommended as a rest stop during a drive to enjoy the scenery. As certain facilities (like the observation tower) have restrictions, the experience is primarily focused on enjoying the landscape and the open air.
Minato Koen is located near the Kashima Coastal Industrial Zone, an area characterized by logistics and industrial facilities. It is easily accessible by car and can be integrated into a driving route that includes other sightseeing spots in Ibaraki or the Itako area. It is a wonderful way to experience the coastal scenery and the unique atmosphere of Japan's industrial ports.
As the park is vast and located near the water, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since shade may be limited, it is useful to bring items for sun protection, such as a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen, to prevent heatstroke and sunburn. Please note that the observation tower is currently closed; for your safety, do not enter any barricaded areas around the tower. While the park is generally free to use, please follow all local signage and maintain good manners to preserve the beautiful environment.
