Minari Shrine is the most prestigious shrine in the Hida region, located in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. Dedicated to the primary deity Mitoshi-no-Okami, it has long been a center of worship known as Minashi-no-Kami. The shrine grounds house significant cultural assets, such as the Inakui Shinme horse attributed to the legendary craftsman Saicho Goro, making it a vital site for understanding the local history and craftsmanship of the Hida region.
While the exact date of its founding is unknown, the shrine has stood as the primary shrine (Ichinomiya) of Hida Province for centuries. Historically referred to as 'Minashi Daibosatsu,' it has served as a spiritual cornerstone for the community. During the Meiji era, it was officially recognized under the national shrine ranking system. Today, it is designated as a 'Beppyo Shrine' by the Association of Shinto Shrines. The site holds numerous precious assets, including the wooden statue of Minari Shrine (a Gifu Prefectural cultural property) and the 'Minari Shrine Ritual Arts,' which is recognized as an important intangible folk cultural property.
The shrine grounds are filled with historical architecture and cultural treasures. A major highlight is the Inakui Shinme horse, attributed to the master artist Saicho Goro, which is a precious exhibit deeply loved by locals due to its accompanying legends. Another significant structure is the Ema-den (votive tablet hall), designated as a cultural property of Takayama City. Additionally, the 'Great Sugi' (Japanese Cedar) tree, a designated natural monument of Gifu Prefecture, provides a majestic and natural landscape that enhances the sacred atmosphere of the shrine.
Minari Shrine hosts various seasonal festivals and rituals. For instance, on May 1st and 2nd, the annual festival (Miya-matsuri) is held, featuring traditional ritual performances such as Tokei-raku (cockfighting dance), Kamidori-odori, and Shishimai (lion dance). Furthermore, from October 1st to November 30th, the shrine accepts requests for Shichi-Go-San prayers, a ritual to pray for the healthy growth of children. Visiting during these specific seasonal festivals allows travelers to witness the living traditions of the region.
Minari Shrine is located south of the central Takayama city area.
