Minami Awa Sun Line is a scenic coastal road that connects Minamiwa Town and Mugi Town in Tokushima Prefecture. The route winds through an undulating landscape overlooking the vast Pacific Ocean and the powerful Kuroshio Current. Along the way, there are four strategically placed lookout parking lots, allowing drivers to pause and soak in the magnificent ocean views. This area is also highly regarded among fishing enthusiasts due to its rich marine environment.
This road is a prefectural road (Tokushima Prefectural Road No. 147, Hiwasa-Mugi Line) that traverses the beautiful coastline between Minamiwa and Mugi. While it once operated as a toll road, it was made free to the public on April 1, 1988. Today, it is celebrated as one of the most beautiful driving routes in the region, cherished for its natural coastal scenery.
The defining feature of the Minami Awa Sun Line is its rhythmic, undulating route along the coast. The four observation points offer panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. Near the Senba Kaike area, you can witness dramatic 200-meter-high cliffs stretching for 2 kilometers. Furthermore, the area is known for its exceptionally clear air, making it an ideal location for stargazing and astronomical observation under a brilliant night sky.
The road is accessible year-round. However, please be aware of specific vehicle restrictions: motorcycles with an engine displacement exceeding 125cc are prohibited from traveling on this road between 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM. If you are traveling by large motorcycle, we highly recommend planning your ride during daylight hours. During seasons with clear skies, the area also becomes a spectacular spot for observing the stars at night.
Driving and touring are the primary ways to enjoy this route. The scenic beauty of the coastline makes it a popular destination for road trips and motorcycle touring. The area is also famous among local anglers for fishing. Additionally, the lookout points serve as perfect spots for photography and stargazing, thanks to the minimal light pollution and pristine air.
Near the starting point of the route, you can find JR Hiwasa Station and the Michi-no-Eki (Roadside Station) Hiwasa, which can serve as great hubs for your journey. On the Mugi side, JR Mugi Station is also available for travelers using public transport to reach the vicinity.
Please strictly adhere to vehicle restrictions. Specifically, motorcycles over 125cc are not allowed between 20:00 and 05:00. When using the lookout parking areas, please ensure you park in the designated spots. If you plan to engage in stargazing, bring warm clothing to protect against the drop in temperature at night. For any nearby amenities or shops, having both cash and credit cards ready is recommended for a smooth experience.
