Minakuchi Castle Ruins is a historic site located in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture. It holds a significant place in history as a lodging built for the third Shogun of the Edo Bakufu, Tokugawa Iemitsu, during his visits to Kyoto. Due to its use of natural spring water in its moats, it was also known as 'Hekisui-jo' (Azure Water Castle). Currently, the site is open as the Minakuchi Castle Museum, featuring a reconstructed 'Sumiyagura' (corner tower) that mimics the original architecture. The sight of the white-walled structure reflecting on the surface of the water is an iconic and breathtaking view of this location.

Historical & Cultural Background

In the early Edo period, this site was developed as a lodging for the Shogun and later became the seat of the Minakuchi Domain (25,000 koku). Following the Meiji Restoration, many structures were lost; some corner towers were sold to local merchants, and parts of the stone walls were even used as paving stones for the Ohmi Railway. However, in 1972, the site's historical value as a Shogun's lodging was officially recognized, and it was designated as a historical site of Shiga Prefecture. Today, it is carefully preserved as a local symbol of history.

This is a model of a cross-shaped Western sword associated with Kato Yoshiaki (one of the Seven Spears of Shizugatake), the founder of the Minakuchi Domain, and is held by Toei Shrine. Additionally, the reconstructed corner tower and the scenic view of the moats fed by natural springs provide a vivid visual connection to the castle's former grandeur.
