Mimuroto-ji is located in Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture, and serves as the 10th sacred site of the Saigoku Sanjusansho Kannon Pilgrimage. As a distinguished temple of the Shugendo tradition, it has long been a center of spiritual devotion. It is most widely celebrated as the 'Hydrangea Temple' (Ajisai-dera), where a breathtaking sea of colorful hydrangeas blooms in early summer. The temple grounds are meticulously maintained with specialized gardens, including plum blossom and azalea gardens, ensuring that visitors can experience a unique way of natural beauty depending on the time of year they visit.
The temple honors Kannon Bodhisattva as its principal deity. Its history is deeply intertwined with the cultural heritage of Uji, and it houses many structures designated as Tangible Cultural Properties of Kyoto Prefecture. Holding the prestigious status of a distinguished mountain temple of the Shugendo sect, Mimuroto-ji has welcomed countless pilgrims over the centuries. The greatest allure of Mimuroto-ji is its seasonal gardens. In spring, the grounds are adorned with weeping plum blossoms, Kurume azaleas, and Hirudo azaleas. In early summer, the vibrant hydrangeas paint the temple in brilliant colors. As a sacred site of the Saigoku 33 Pilgrimage, visitors can also explore the sacred Buddhist statues and historic architecture. Wandering through the grounds allows you to enjoy a peaceful stroll among traditional Japanese landscapes, stone monuments, and charmingly weathered structures.
Mimuroto-ji offers a completely different landscape depending on the season. From mid-February to late March, the 'Weeping Plum Garden' opens, signaling the arrival of spring. From mid-April to early May, the vibrant colors of the Kurume and Hirudo azaleas are a sight to behold. The hydrangea season in early summer is one of the most popular and spectacular times to visit. We recommend visiting during daylight hours to fully appreciate the vivid colors of the gardens and the intricate details of the Buddhist statues. Please check the seasonal opening schedules before your visit.
In addition to sightseeing, visitors can receive a Goshuin (sacred temple seal). Please note that during the first three days of the New Year and throughout June, Goshuin are provided as written slips rather than being hand-written directly into your book. Walking through the gardens to admire the seasonal flowers is a quintessential experience. For those interested in spiritual journeys, participating in the Saigoku 33 Kannon pilgrimage is a deeply cultural way to experience the temple's heritage.

The temple grounds are extensive and feature various elevations, including slopes, stairs, and uneven paths. We highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If you wish to receive a Goshuin, bringing your own pen and Goshuin book will make the process smoother. Please be aware that Goshuin reception is suspended between 12:00 and 13:00 daily. Additionally, please check the official website before visiting, as access may be restricted in the event of severe weather warnings.
