Okishiki Coast, located in Uki City, Kumamoto Prefecture, is a breathtaking coastal area facing the Ariake Sea. When the tide recedes, vast sand ripples—exquisite curves sculpted by wind and waves—emerge across the tidal flats, creating a masterpiece of natural art.
Recognized in both the '100 Best Beaches in Japan' and '100 Best Sunsets in Japan' lists, the moment where natural textures merge with the colors of the sky is truly mesmerizing. The name of this coast is tied to an ancient legend. It is said that during the expedition to Kyushu by Emperor Keiko (the 12th Emperor), the scenery was so breathtaking that he momentarily halted his palanquin (mikoshi) to gaze upon it. This historical connection has preserved the site not just as a natural landmark, but as a place that has moved human hearts for centuries.
The highlight of Okishiki Coast is the combination of the 'sand ripples at low tide' and the 'sunset.' As the tide goes out, complex and beautiful patterns appear on the vast flats.
